Apple gets ready to join the foldable club as September event invites go out

- In addition to the iPhone 18 Pro series, Apple’s expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone.
- New Apple Watches and an Apple TV 4K refresh could also be on the agenda.
With the Pixel 11 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 launches now in the rear-view mirror, it may already feel like most of the summer’s biggest smartphone news is already behind you — but there’s still plenty on the horizon worth getting excited about. For as much buzz as Samsung’s latest foldables managed to generate, there’s arguably no model more eagerly anticipated than Apple’s inaugural folder. And today today we may finally know when we’ll get to meet it, as Apple sends out invitations to its next launch event.
Apple has scheduled an event two weeks out, on Wednesday, September 9 at 10am PT (1pm ET).
The star of the show is almost certainly going to be Apple’s inaugural foldable phone, which we’ve heard may land as the iPhone Ultra. But it won’t take the spotlight alone, and we’re also looking forward to the introduction of new iPhone 18 Pro models.
Much like Samsung did with its own Galaxy Z Fold 8 this year, Apple’s approach with the iPhone Ultra is expected to embrace a book-style form factor that’s wider than typical foldables. That choice has proven enormously popular with Galaxy users, and we’ll be curious to see if more manufacturers start adopting it in the wake of Apple’s launch.
The base iPhone 18 will likely not land until sometime next year, but September’s event should bring us both an iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Possible upgrades include a variable aperture camera, some fun new colors, and a nice battery boost. This year in particular, though, we’re just as interested in learning what the phones will cost as we are hearing all about their new hardware.
While everybody else is getting into screenless fitness trackers, Apple’s own effort is likely still further out, and September’s event may only bring us the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. And then on the smart home front, we’re looking forward to a new HomePod Mini and Apple TV 4K.
