KEY SECTIONS

What is PlayStation Stars, and how does it work?

With PlayStation Stars, you earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities. Some campaigns are relatively easy to complete, such as Sony’s “Monthly Check-In” campaigns which only require you to play any game per month to receive the reward. Other campaigns will challenge you to earn specific trophies, such as being among the first players to platinum a AAA title in your region.

Campaigns are updated regularly, and gamers can check the PlayStation App to see when new ones launch. The more campaigns you complete, the faster you will level up. Leveling up gets you more rewards and digital collectibles. More on those later.

The PlayStation Stars program is currently exclusive to the PlayStation app. Still, Sony says they are working on expanding the service to consoles in the future, meaning there will likely be a dedicated app on your PS5 or PS4.

Who can join PlayStation Stars?

Anyone with a PlayStation console, such as a PS4 or PS5, can join PlayStation Stars. The service is free to join, although you must be an adult to have a PSN account registered in a region where the program is available. Membership and rewards cannot be shared or transferred between accounts.

Do you need PlayStation Plus to join PlayStation Stars?

While you will earn certain benefits for being a PlayStation Plus member, a PlayStation Plus membership is not required to join PlayStation Stars.

PlayStation Plus members who join PlayStation Stars earn points with every purchase made on the PlayStation Store. Those points can be exchanged for PSN wallet funds, exclusive PlayStation App display case collectibles, and more.

What rewards do PlayStation Stars offer?

There are two main types of rewards — loyalty points and digital collectibles. Points can be earned by purchasing games from the PlayStation Store. Points can be redeemed in a catalog that includes PSN wallet funds, exclusive digital collectibles, and select PlayStation Store products. The points earned for purchasing or pre-ordering a game amount to roughly four % back on your purchases.

Digital collectibles are small, 3D models of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of iconic characters from games and past devices and consoles from Sony’s history of gaming products. It’s kind of like an NFT, but they can’t be traded or sold, so they’re only there to be admired. There will be new collectibles to earn regularly, ultra-rare collectibles to strive for, or spontaneous surprises to collect.

The digital collectibles you earn or acquire can be arranged on a display case within the PlayStation App. You can also set the display case to be viewed by other players if you want to show off your collection.

Further, the PlayStation Stars’ leveling system is heavily focused on digital collectibles. With each level you reach, you will earn a commemorative digital collectible. See a list of the leveling tiers and what they unlock below:

  • Tier 1 Milestones — Joined the program and started completing campaigns.
  • Tier 1 Benefits — Digital collectibles through completing campaigns, one celebration collectible.
  • Tier 2 Milestones — Bought one full game from the PlayStation Store and earned one Uncommon trophy.
  • Tier 2 Benefits — Level two celebration collectible and access to all level one collectibles.
  • Tier 3 Milestones — Bought two full games from the PlayStation store and earned 32 Uncommon trophies.
  • Tier 3 Benefits — Level three celebration collectible and a birthday collectible.
  • Tier 4 Milestones — Bought four full games from the PlayStation Store and earned 128 Uncommon trophies.
  • Tier 4 Benefits — Celebration collectible, all Level 1-3 collectibles, and “chat priority routing.”

One controversial aspect of this leveling system is that players won’t get access to “chat priority routing” until they reach level four. While it is understandable to incentivize gamers to earn rewards and collectibles by playing games so that they can purchase and play more games, it isn’t very consumer friendly to dangle better customer service behind a paywall.
