TL;DR
  • Popular PS2 emulator for PS5, PS5SX2, just received its v2.00 update, introducing built-in frame generation (up to 120fps), up to 8x resolution scaling on PS5 Pro, one-click HD texture packs, and restored online multiplayer for some games.
  • The update comes on the back of the recent Relapse exploit that makes it fairly easy to jailbreak a PS5 as long as it is running firmware v13.60 or lower.

The PS5 jailbreak community has seen a surge in activity this month, most of it riding the back of the new Relapse exploit, which allows any PlayStation 5 with firmware version 13.60 or earlier to be successfully jailbroken. This firmware was released in July 2026, so as long as you skipped the recent v14.xx updates, you can quite easily run homebrew apps and even a Nintendo Switch emulator on your PS5. If you need even more reason to consider jailbreaking your PS5, one of the most popular PS2 emulators just received a massive upgrade that lets you play classic PS2 games on your current console.

Developer sword_pdf has rolled out PS5SX2 v2.00, a major update to the standalone PlayStation 2 emulator built for jailbroken PS5 consoles.

The new release brings built-in frame generation, giving players the ability to double framerates from 30 FPS to 60 FPS, or push 60 FPS titles up to a blistering 120 FPS. If you have a PS5 Pro, the emulator can scale internal rendering up to 8x resolution, cleaning up muddy CRT-era visuals on modern 4K TV panels.

The update also brings better handling for multi-disc games, support for cheat discs, per-game hardware fixes, and the ability to use overlays in some games. The emulator’s recent v1.9 release also brought several quality-of-life additions that are carried over to this release. You can now get one-click HD texture packs, native RetroAchievements integration that triggers PS5-style trophy pop-ups, and revived online multiplayer functionality for supported network games.

For those looking to dive into the PS5 homebrew scene, the new jailbreak process is relatively simple at a high level. First, verify that your console is running compatible firmware (v13.60 or earlier) and turn off automatic system updates. You then visit the Relapse WebKit exploit page in the PS5 browser to execute the userland entry point and clear system restrictions. Finally, you then trigger a payload loader like EtaHEN to enable unsigned package installation, plug in a USB drive containing your homebrew PKG files, and launch your software. The jailbreak does not persist across a system restart, but it’s easy enough to trigger again.

Keep in mind that jailbreaking your PS5 will restrict access to PlayStation Network services, so you will want to weigh the retro-gaming gains against the loss of official online multiplayer. For some users, this might be a small price to pay.
