The seven-inch Amazon Kindle Fire will be getting a big brother in 2012. Amazon is said to be developing a Kindle Fire model with a much larger, 8.9-inch display.

According to a DIGITIMES report, upstream supplier sources have mentioned that users can expect the new 8.9-inch version of the Amazon Kindle Fire to launch by the end of the second quarter in 2012.

Amazon is said to have selected  the 8.9-inch display for the current Kindle Fire’s big brother to take advantage of LG’s and Samsung’s promotion of 8.9-inch panels.  Amazon reportedly wants to stay clear of the competition in the 9.7- to 10.1-inch tablets market.

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, will begin production of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire in the middle of Q2 2012.  Foxconn will also begin producing the 7-inch Kindle Fire in Q1 2012, alongside Quanta Computer, which has been producing Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

With larger tablets currently flooding the market with display panels of 9.7-inches to 10.1-inches, Amazon will also develop its own.

Also, the Amazon Kindle Fire will get not just one big brother but two.  Aside from the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire, Amazon is also rumored to be developing a 10.1-inch Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Ice is also a hot topic, although there is little information about this device.  Rumors say that it will also have an 8.9-inch display and expected to arrive in early 2012.

It is possible that the production of the Kindle Ice and the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire will be simultaneous, as they have the same display panel size, or, it could be that this rumored follow up for the 7-inch Kindle Fire is the Kindle Ice.

What do you think? Would you prefer a Kindle Fire with a much larger display?

I do not want a larger display. I think that the smaller display makes it a more mobile device and easy to concile as necessary. I would like to see the dual front/back camera options placed on the upcoming kindle formats. I just got a kindle fire and am impressed with it’s functionality. I really wanted an IPad 2 but my budget did not allow for it. The Kindle Fire is a very good option. I am happy with it!……..

The display size is pretty much perfect for reading; for watching videos, not so much. I think the 8.9 inch would be right at the top end of ‘tote-able’ size for large jacket pockets, etc.

The 10.1 size is just too big to be carried around; it’s fine for watching videos, gaming, etc — but for reading books and e-zines, the 8.9″ will be optimal.

There are other issues, often commented on, that I’m sure the Fire 2 (or Ice) will incorporate: external volume control, power button on top rather than bottom, maybe a full-size USB port, and 16 or 32GB internal memory without having to get files or apps off the cloud.

At this price point, and with hundreds of thousands of movies and Kindle book titles downloadable for free, the Kindle Fire pays for itself overnight. I love mine; yet when an 8.9″ display model shows up, I’ll buy that one too.

I have a Kindle Fire and it is heavy enough let alone a bigger model. I use it as a table but read books on my K4 ($79) with e-ink.
