How to turn an iPad on or off — as in all the way, not just bring it in and out of sleep — is certainly a basic skill, but something everyone needs to learn at some point. Here’s what to do for any particular iPad model.

QUICK ANSWER

Turn on any iPad by holding down its top button (a.k.a. the sleep/wake button) until an Apple logo appears onscreen. iPads without a home button can be turned off by holding the sleep/wake button as well as one of the volume buttons, then dragging a slider. If your iPad does have a home button, just hold sleep/wake until the slider appears.
