5 Android apps you shouldn't miss this week - Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 388th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

• Samsung is ending its support for Samsung Cloud. This week, the company extended its close date to November 30th, 2021. People can easily migrate their stuff to OneDrive by the end of October 2021. We’re unsure why Samsung is ending support, but it’s probably a lack of interest and use. The original end of life date was August 31st, so Samsung gave people two more months to get their stuff out.
• In 2014, Sundar Pichai said he wanted Android and Chrome OS on every possible screen. Years later, it’s actually Microsoft bringing Android apps to Windows and it’s using Amazon to do it. Our own Robert Triggs pontificates on the ramifications of this and how Google failed to deliver, but Microsoft didn’t.
• Google is experimenting with a new feature in Google Chrome. The feature puts Search results in a horizontal scroll. Google calls it Continuous Search Navigation. The feature is available in the Flags section of Chrome. Hit the link to learn more about how it works and how to enable it.
• Google is facing yet another antitrust lawsuit in the United States. The lawsuit alleges that Google abuses its power at the top by charging developers too much of a fee for using the platform. This is part of a much longer, ongoing battle with Epic Games. Fortnite was pulled from Google Play for this same reason. A later update gave us more details. There are 36 US states involved in the lawsuit. Google says that the lawsuit ignores the greater issue where its biggest competitor is Apple’s App Store and not other Android app stores. Keep an eye on this one, it could get interesting.

Orion

Price: Free

Orion is a dating app with a sense of humor. It helps you build your profile with suggestions and prompts and helps break the ice by asking both people questions. The app focuses mainly on chat and competes directly with services like Hinge and Tinder. The app is relatively new so there are several bugs. Most complain about account creation and login issues. Otherwise, it seems to be a rather enjoyable experience. We hope the developers keep making things better.

Rage of Destiny

Price: Free to play

Rage of Destiny is an idle game similar to games like AFK Arena. Players get the fun of managing heroes, leveling up, and doing stuff, but the majority of the game takes place while the player isn’t logged on. The graphics look pretty good and the gameplay is decent enough. You can obviously pay to get ahead, but it’s not as pay-to-win as some other games in the genre. Some people complain that it’s too similar to Mobile Legends: Adventure, but that’s only really an issue if you played one game and moved on to this one.

Dogname

Price: Free / Up to $2.99

Dogname is a simple app. It helps people come up with a name for their new dog with their significant other. The app includes over 30,000 names. It presents the names in card format similar to apps like Tinder. You swipe one way on the names you like and the other way on names you don’t. From there, your partner does the same. The app notifies you when you both find something you like. Even though it’s for dogs, you can name basically anything with this app, so it works for all pets. Honestly, a version of this for babies would prevent a lot of arguing too. In any case, it works well.

Shining Nikki

Price: Free to play

Shining Nikki is the sequel to the popular Love Nikki game. It’s a fashion game where players dress up Nikki in a variety of outfits. The studio reportedly worked on this game for three years. The result is an absolute ton of garments to dress up Nikki with. Players play through the game, dress up Nikki, and do things like photoshoots for magazines and other such events. It’s a sim for sure, and a fashion sim at that. It’s not the most popular genre, but it does have a loyal following. Make no mistake, this is a rather large game so make sure to check your storage before downloading. Some players also find the game repetitive after a while. Otherwise, it’s a great fashion game.

Water Resistance Tester

Price: Free

Water Resistance Tester is an interesting app. It uses the barometer in your app to see if your weather sealing is still intact. Basically, the app has you press your phone with both thumbs and measure the pressure within your device. It declares the device sealed if the pressure increases when you press and not sealed if the pressure doesn’t increase when pressed. This is actually a pretty useful little tool. Dropping your phone or age can cause breaks in the seal, so this is useful for making sure your phone is still water-resistant. We’re not 100% certain how accurate it is, but we tested it with an IP68 device and a non-resistant device and the app called it both times. Neat!
