The three-year-old Samsung Gear S2 is still getting updates
- Samsung is rolling out an update to its three-year-old Gear S2 smartwatch.
- The update introduces redesigned icons and widgets, additional fitness features, and more.
- The update is rolling out through the Samsung Gear app.
In a world where the three-year-old Moto 360 (2nd Gen.) no longer gets updates, the equally-ancient Samsung Gear S2 received an update that includes a redesigned interface, new fitness features, and more.
With the redesign, icons and widgets are now optimized for the Gear S2’s circular design. Samsung said this should help create a more unified look when navigating between screens.
Speaking of screens, the new App Shortcuts widget automatically puts your recently used and favorite apps in one place. The Quick Panel, meanwhile, can now be accessed from any screen instead of just the watch face.
Samsung Health was also updated with a new multi-workout widget for quicker access to your favorite exercise, inactivity alerts that let you know when you have been a lazy good-for-nothing for a while, and a new weight management feature. As the name implies, the feature displays your daily exercise and caloric intake.
The app also provides a quick glance of the number of steps you have taken and your heart rate.
Elsewhere, you can now use the Gear S2 to control the Gear VR and PowerPoint presentations. Its usefulness is somewhat dubious, since you will interact with a small touchscreen, but it’s there for convenience.
Lastly, the weather widget provides weather information, forecast updates, UV index, sunrise and sunset hours, and other weather details.
As old as the Gear S2 is, it is impressive that Samsung continues to push updates to the smartwatch. Its battery life might not be as good as it was, and it will likely not get Tizen 3.0, but the Gear S2 is still a decent smartwatch with a nifty rotating bezel.
The update is available now through the Samsung Gear app.
