Samsung Galaxy S24 specs
The entire Galaxy S24 family is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor in the United States, but the situation is a bit different elsewhere. While the Galaxy S24 Ultra is confirmed to feature Qualcomm’s tech globally, the S24 and S24 Plus will feature the Exynos 2400 in many markets, including Europe.
While this is a bit disappointing, the good news is the two smaller S24 models will still have all the same core AI features as the S24 Ultra regardless of the SoC, though there are likely at least a few tricks that are exclusively aimed at the Ultra model.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 isn't a massive departure from its predecessor but the addition of new AI tricks help set it apart.
Focusing specifically on the Galaxy S24, there’s not too much of a difference from its predecessor beyond the aforementioned SoC changes. The Galaxy S24 upgrades the display by 0.1 inches to a slightly larger 6.2-inch screen this year and bumps the battery up by 100mAh, but that’s about it. The footprint is also a bit bigger on the S24, due mostly to the slight changes to the screen size.
The camera is also identical between these two models, though the Galaxy S24 series is making improvements to its camera software and other refinements that should still allow it to take at least a slight edge over its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus specs
The Galaxy S24 Plus is essentially the same phone as the standard Galaxy S24 in terms of camera performance and special features, but it boasts a larger display, a bigger battery, faster charging, and more base storage and RAM. Like the S24, the new Plus model’s display is slightly larger than that of its predecessor. There’s also a battery increase over the Galaxy S23 Plus, with the S24 Plus upgrading from a 4,700mAh to a 4,900mAh battery. That said, it’s still smaller and weaker in several aspects compared to the Ultra model.
Compared to the Galaxy S24, the S24 Plus offers faster 45W wired charging and includes UWB (Ultra-Wideband) support. However, it’s worth noting that both of these features were also present in the S23 Plus. Overall, there aren’t many new features in the S24 Plus; it’s just a bit larger and will come with either a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or an Exynos 2400 processor, depending on the market.
If you’re not an Exynos fan, that means the Galaxy S23 Plus might be a better fit for those who live in countries like Europe.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra specs
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the one phone that will universally run on Qualcomm chips. Beyond the processor, a lot of the biggest changes are mostly down to aesthetics and a change in the telephoto camera.
Starting with design changes, the Galaxy S24 Ultra now features a titanium casing over aluminum, giving it a more elegant feel. The flatter display also translates to a design that feels quite a bit different in the pocket and hands. There’s also newly improved Gorilla Glass Armor, which is supposed to be even more powerful than Victus and is reserved specifically for the Ultra model.
There’s also the addition of Wi-Fi 7 this time, though, technically, the S24 Ultra also had Wi-Fi 7, but it wasn’t formally supported.
Camera-wise, there’s a noteworthy update in the telephoto lens. The new telephoto camera reduces optical zoom to 5x but compensates with a more powerful 50MP sensor, compared to the older 10MP version. This change aims to enhance zoom quality in more commonly used ranges, although it might be seen as a drawback for those who prefer a higher zoom capacity.
Galaxy S24 series vs the competition: How does it compare?
As the first major flagship release of 2024, the Galaxy S24 series holds an advantage over much of its Android competition. Notably, it’s the first to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, available to those opting for the Ultra model or residing in the US. The series not only boasts impressive performance but also enhances its appeal with new Galaxy AI features, positioning it as a strong contender against the Pixel 8 ($699 at Amazon) series’ most attractive features.
The combination of advanced AI capabilities and the latest chipset makes the Galaxy S24 series a formidable player in terms of sheer power. The iPhone 15 series is certainly one of its most obvious contenders, though it’s a very different experience thanks to Apple’s iOS. The Pixel 8 Pro is also a good option, though the Tensor G3 isn’t anywhere as powerful as the chips found in Apple and Samsung’s flagships.
The Galaxy S24 not only has tons of power but its new AI tricks help give it better parity with the Pixel 8 as well.
Out of all three phones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is probably the most compelling option as it sees a major design change and adds the most new features out of the three models. That’s the real problem, though. Arguably, Samsung’s biggest competition comes from within in the form of last year’s Galaxy S23 series.
The change back to Exynos means some disgruntled European consumers might be more inclined to get the Galaxy S23 or S23 Plus at a sharp discount. The Galaxy S24 series price increase in the US could also lead some American consumers to reach the same decision. Even staples like the camera haven’t changed dramatically with the Galaxy S24 series, aside from the Ultra, though expected camera software improvements could still give the newer phones the edge.
Still, if you’re looking for the most powerful Samsung phones available, you won’t find anything better than the new Galaxy S24 family.
