How to fax from your iPhone if you're stuck in the 1980s

1980s technology lives on in 2020s technology.

Actual fax machines may have gone the way of the pager and the dinosaurs by now, but the underlying technology is still very much alive. You can send faxes by email, and so logic dictates that you can also send a fax from your iPhone. In that case, fax machines have suddenly become much smaller than they used to be. Here are some good ways to send a fax if you or the recipient are still psychologically stuck in the 1980s.

QUICK ANSWER

If you want to send a fax from your iPhone, you can use a faxing app (which is probably the easiest.) You can also use an email faxing service via your email app. Free fax services for smartphones are virtually impossible to find, however. You would have to pay a subscription to keep using them after any trial period has passed.

Fax from your iPhone with a fax app

Arguably, the easiest way to send a fax from your iPhone is by using a fax app. There are several fax apps available on the App Store, such as eFax, Fax Burner, and FaxFile. Once you have downloaded and installed the app, you can easily fax your documents by uploading them to the app and entering the recipient’s fax number.

It should be pointed out from the beginning that you are not going to have any luck finding a free fax service for the iPhone. Most apps will let you send one or two for free to try them out, then they ask for money. Easy Fax lets you watch ads to earn free fax credits, but we wouldn’t really recommend that. Something like Fax Free is much better — with the customer ratings to prove it. Despite the name, fax costs with this app start at $4.99 for a week. If you need the app for business purposes, do you really want to watch an ad first to get the credits?

Fax from your iPhone with an email-to-fax service

Another way to send a fax from your iPhone is by using an email-to-fax service through your email app. This service allows you to send a fax by sending an email with the document attached to a specific email address. The document can come from iCloud, another cloud storage service, or you can take a picture of the document with your iPhone camera.

Popular email-to-fax services include eFax and MyFax. To use this service, you will need to sign up for an account and then send an email with the document attached to the fax number in the format of faxnumber@faxservice.com. These services work really well, but again, they won’t be free. After one or two freebies, the company will ask you to pony up for a subscription. MyFax starts at $10 per month and goes as high as $37.50 per month.

Another good thing is that these companies usually allow you to transfer over your existing landline fax number to them (if you still have one, that is.)

FAQs

Some companies offer this, depending on the plan you are paying for. You usually have to pay more to receive faxes, but it’s definitely doable.

If you are paying for the service, then there shouldn’t be adverts attached. If so, change your fax provider immediately.

That is difficult to answer, as all fax services will have varying degrees of quality. However, it usually doesn’t take any more than five minutes.
