Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx owners will be thrilled to hear that the waiting may be over and that the update they were waiting for, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is on the way. Motorola confirmed a few weeks ago that the two handsets will get ICS in the following six weeks, but the company failed to specify a precise roll out date.

Today’s news comes from Phandroid, which has “received word from a reader that Verizon is sending text messages to Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx customers to let them know that Android 4.0 is on its way.”

The online publication points out that during the ICS update, the My Verizon app will be uninstalled, as users will have to get the ICS-compatible Verizon app that’s already available in Google Play.

Unfortunately, the text messages did not reveal any more details about the incoming ICS update, so we’ll just have to wait for Verizon to issue more details about the pending Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx upgrades.

In case you have rooted your RAZR model, you should stay away from the update for the time being. But if you do get similar messages from Verizon that point to an imminent ICS arrival, let us know by using the comment section below!

I received this about an hour ago from verizon as a text message.

Free Verizon Message: Your phone will soon be upgraded to Android 4.0. At that time we will remove your Verizon Wireless Mobile IM app because it is not supported on Android 4.0. Please download a new instant messaging app to use IM on your phone. Thank you for using Mobile IM!

Thanks for posting the text of the message. I didn’t get this message but I’ve never used the Verizon IM app so maybe the message is only being sent to those who have used the app.

      • I received the message….and never used the app….use ebuddy instead.

“In case you have rooted your RAZR model, you should stay away from the update for the time being.” Why is that? Just curious. Does it un-root? Not a big deal if it does.

    • ESP J

when you root , your hacking your phone, , it will unroot your phone , if it doesnt brick it

    • Daniel Furrey

  • Codeapalooza

As far as I know it is not the “My Verizon” app that is being removed, it is the Verizon IM app. Which I’m not sure anyone uses.

  • Big Red

Looks like all the text message is to notify us that Mobile IM will be removed when ICS is placed onto Razr/Raz rMax. That is all. No official date given yet for ICS release per vzw rep

  • tbetz

Cool! looks like I picked up my new Razr Maxx at just the right time — yesterday!

I got the text twice about it. I think it’s just to tell you the Verizon Mobile I’M app will be uninstalled if you have it. Who knows what “soon” actually means to them.

Thus wait is grueling! It’s like hearing “Joe” drive down on the next street over!
for those that don’t know, “Joe” is the company that drives ice cream trucks through neighborhoods in Seattle.

  • nmadvr

I did not get a notification but i did get the update forced down yesteday!

  • Bad_news_verizon

My update went through OK. Bad news It screws your screen display of images: The images were sharp before, but with this upgrade, the images seem to be lacking this sharpness. What a bummer!. There seems to be no way to change display sharpness, though there seems to be a brightness control!. On the better side when you shut off the data manager from allowing $G access, the battery lasts a week!. Also it seem to cut down the heat generated. Before my phone seems to get sufficiently hot (yes I mean hot!) that I had to shut it down.

  • Sandra

It feels like it made my phone slower n laggy !!!???

  • Leona

I hate the updates. Looking for new phone. Verizon Droid is now horrible and not worth getting!

  • disqus_OOokJg7o5T

I can make and receive calls but i cannot send text messages. I can only receive. What causes this and how can I fix it?
