Android Wear may not be turning the heads that many of us envisioned that it would, but it’s still probably the best smartwatch platform out there right now. It’s been getting progressively better since its initial launch and the devices that run it have gotten better as well. With any good device, you’ll need good apps as well so let’s check out the best Android Wear apps.

1Weather best android wear apps1Weather

[Price: Free / $1.99]
1Weather is already among the best weather apps available today and one of its key features is Android Wear support. With your smartwatch, you can take a look at current weather conditions and the weather forecast. It’s not as powerful on your watch as it is on your actual device, but that shouldn’t stop you from giving it a shot. It’s totally free to use with $1.99 being the price to remove advertising from the app.

Find My Phone best Android Wear appsFind My Phone

[Price: Free / $1.99]
It’s true that Android Device Manager supports Android Wear devices now and for the bare minimum, we recommend you at least activate that. Those looking for something a little extra should give Find My Phone for Android Wear a shot. It uses the link to your device as a means for finding it. You can turn on the flashlight, make alarms go off, turn on vibration, turn on the screen, and more. About half of those require buying the pro version but it’s a solid app that works very well.

Google Keep best Android Wear appsGoogle Keep

[Price: Free]
Google Keep is perhaps the best note taking application available for Android Wear. You get a good amount of functionality on your Wear device, including the ability to view and read notes you’ve previously taken. You can also create notes by using the “Okay, Google” hotword and asking it to take a note. The phone and Wear app work very well and the entire experience is free without any in-app purchases.

IF by IFTTT best Android Wear appsIF by IFTTT

[Price: Free]
IF by IFTTT may be the most powerful Android Wear app that is currently available. For those who don’t know, you can use this application to create automatic actions based on something that happens. For instance, you can set the app to backup your photo to Dropbox after you post it on Instagram. IF by IFTTT has a whole page of Android Wear “recipes” that you can use to make your devices connect with each other in various, actually useful ways.

pixtocam best android wear appsPixtoCam for Android Wear

[Price: $1.99]
PixtoCam is a unique application that allows you to use your Android Wear device as a viewfinder for your phone camera. There are a bunch of apps like this and most of them work very well, but we liked the features offered by PixtoCam. It focuses on photographers and lets you do things like snap pictures, zoom, use a timer, adjust flash settings, and more. You can also use it as a utility app to see things on your watch while you point your phone in spots you otherwise couldn’t see.

pocket casts best android wear appsPocket Casts

[Price: $3.99]
Most music applications have added Android Wear support at this point but the same cannot be said for podcast applications. Pocket Casts is an amazing podcast app with a huge amount of available content in both audio and video podcast format. Android Wear support includes the ability to control the podcasts with pause/play and custom skip intervals. That’s about as good as it gets for podcast support on Android Wear.

Runtastic best android wear appsRuntastic Running & Fitness

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Getting into shape and taking care of one’s body is definitely in right now and one of the many uses for Android Wear is for fitness purposes. You have Google Fit which will count your steps and give you some extra features but if you want something more, we recommend you try out Runtastic. It was one of the earliest apps to have Android Wear support that lets you control the app directly from your wrist. It’s a great fitness app and one of the best fitness apps for Android Wear.

store for android wear best Android Wear appsStore for Android Wear

[Price: Free]
Despite being out a while, Store for Android Wear is still a necessary app for Android Wear owners. This one allows you to quickly find Android Wear apps which is great because the Google Play Store still doesn’t do this very well. All Android Wear apps link to the Play Store which is the safest place to get apps and you can find all kinds of recommendations and selections to make your Wear device work better than ever before. It’s also totally free.

wear messenger best android wear appsWear Messenger

[Price: $1.62]
Wear Messenger is an SMS application that allows you to send texts from your Android Wear device. Not a lot of texting apps have SMS support yet which makes this great if you use an app that doesn’t. It even includes a built-in keyboard so you can tap out messages to your friends. The full QWERTY keyboard isn’t great but the T9 keyboard works pretty well for short missives. It’s a fun little SMS app and one that actually works on Wear!

Wear Mini Launcher best android wear appsWear Mini Launcher

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Wear Mini Launcher was one of the first Android Wear apps that gained success and it’s currently one of the highest rated Android Wear apps out there. The app gives you the opportunity to quickly find your Android Wear apps on your device. The latest Wear updates have made finding the app drawer easier but this app makes it easier still. If you’re a power user who wants to find those apps and use them, this is the app you can use to do it.

    Look Behind is pretty cool.

This app is awesome! Probably won’t use it, but still. I’m buying it.

    Facer is also pretty awesome.

Everyone please flag these trolls that are currently plaguing Android Authority.

  • ServedTheUS

This list is a joke without Facer

    • JosephHindy

We’re doing a separate app for watch faces that Facer will likely be on. These are apps, not watch faces. It’s like putting live wallpapers on a best apps list. that’s its own thing yknow?

      • ServedTheUS

No, I don’t know. Facer is not a “watch face” it is an app and a tool to design and enable watch faces. So if Wear HQ makes the list when it doesnt even run on wear, then Facer should certainly be here.

        • JosephHindy

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you install Facer and long press on the Wear screen, Facer comes up correct? Relax bud, it’s going to get the attention it deserves. It’s a watch face app and should go with the other watch face apps.

  • Jayfeather787

Great to see ways to make the most out of smartwatches. Thanks AA for the list!

  • Tom Z

Question: If I use an app like Runtastic or Runkeeper, can I keep that app in the forground on the Android Wear device?
Or, does the watch always go back to the watchface when the screen goes off?
I would like to twist my wrist and see the stats from my running app without having to touch anything on the watch.

    • Steve Timms

I use strava on the watch and it stays in front the whole time. It keeps the screen on too, so the pace is always visible.

  • McLaren F1P1

Put full blown Android on the watches and put adapted launchers for the tiny screen! These smart watches ask for a premium while giving less!

  • David Wittlich

I love the Wear Mini Launcher, best app I’ve installed yet! So glad I came across this article!

  • To be honest, the best Android Wear that I know so far is called “Flash Watch”. It’s just a watch face, but the most beautiful one out there.

  • Dan Greene

This is a good list to get things started. I tried Wear Mini Launcher initially, but found it rather unresponsive on my 360, so I switched to Swipify and it easily proved to be the superior launcher. Especially when you consider that it eliminates the need for one of your other suggestions, Wear Music Controller. Swipify’s built-in music controls work perfectly with Poweramp – my music player of choice – and it’s free on top of it. Doesn’t get much more convenient than that.

Attopedia is the best I’ve come across, and I’ve read a few lists like this. You voice search a Wikipedia topic, and then there’s a really slick way to navigate through all the headings and subheadings.

iCountTimer, a fitness timer plus counter app, now works with Android Wear…Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icounttimer.android

New watch face just posted (“Smart WatchFace – Wx/Calendar”), so much info it should maybe be considered an app. Shows appointments, hourly animated weather forecasts, and lots more. See: http://goo.gl/WsFD9V

  • Marion

I personally would add “Wear.Webcam Watch Face”, which let’s you use any webcam as a background image of this Watch Face. This is great for outdoor freaks, as they can monitor the weather right when looking at the watch.

  • Dennis Mantz

I missed the abillity to view my phone’s signal strength (wifi and 3G/LTE in both percent and dBm) on most of the available watchfaces. So I created a little app to help out. It will show a small notification card that shows the signal strength and network name of the currently used network. The notifications are customizable, e.g. you can set if the app should notify on events like transition between wifi and cellular network or loss of bluetooth connection. It works with all watchfaces and is free and open source!

    Here’s a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpJuCuJaPmo

It’s now available on Google Play (free and no ads): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mantz_it.wearnetworknotifications
