Samsung takes another shot at Apple hours before iPhone Ultra/Duo launch

Apple’s fall hardware event is hours away, and we expect to see the company’s latest range of iPhones on show. This year, however, the manufacturer is also rumored to debut its first-ever foldable, supposedly called the iPhone Ultra or the iPhone Duo, depending on which leak you believe. One of the premier foldable brands in the business right now has, unsurprisingly, taken a subtle jab at the yet-to-be-announced foldable iPhone.

In a video posted to YouTube an hour ago, Samsung formally welcomes Apple to the foldable club. While it doesn’t mention the iPhone Ultra or Apple directly, the video’s timing and title make it clear what Samsung is hinting at, though fans could argue that the company could also be welcoming users to the form factor.

The ad is just 35 seconds long and prominently features the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in multiple angles, along with a cross-section view of the device for good measure. Samsung calls its wide foldable the “world’s lightest fold,” possibly referencing early reports that the iPhone Ultra weighed around 230 to 241 grams. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams.

Samsung may also have a price advantage, according to unconfirmed early reports. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently claimed that Apple initially targeted a $1,999 starting price for the iPhone Ultra. However, the company has reportedly settled for $2,199, possibly due to the ongoing global memory crisis.

If true, this represents a $300 increase over the entry-level Galaxy Z Fold 8 with 256GB of storage. Apple would also be at a disadvantage against the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which starts at $2,099.99.

If you’re not swayed by the fanfare and want a book-style foldable that doesn’t break the $2,000 barrier, Samsung’s recent foldable may be your best bet.
