Samsung could revive 'Classic' moniker for an as-yet-unleaked Galaxy Watch 4

This will likely be good news for purists who were unhappy with the leaked Galaxy Watch 4 renders.

TL;DR
  • A new rumor suggests a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic could be on the way.
  • Theoretically, this watch would probably look a lot more like the Galaxy Watch 3 from last year.
  • Unfortunately, we have only seen renders for the normal Galaxy Watch 4. All we have so far is this new name.

Last week, we saw a set of press renders that undoubtedly depict the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. These renders caused some raised eyebrows since we originally thought they were for a Galaxy Watch Active 4. This was a reasonable assumption since the design looked way more like that Galaxy Watch Active 2 than they did the Galaxy Watch 3.

This was all likely very disappointing for Galaxy Watch fans. If Samsung did deliver a Galaxy Watch 4 that didn’t have the classic look and feel of a “normal” watch, those customers would be left high and dry. Now, though, we have a rumor that suggests we could see a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic instead.

According to 9to5Google, regulatory filings in Thailand show two Samsung model numbers: SM-R875F and SM-R895F. The former is linked to the Galaxy Watch 4, while the latter is clearly labeled as a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

The idea of using “Classic” to differentiate styles of smartwatches isn’t new for Samsung. The company used the moniker back in the Galaxy Gear days. Classic-labeled watches were the ones that looked more like normal watches. Thus, Samsung repeating this strategy for the Galaxy Watch 4 makes perfect sense.

Of course, we won’t be able to really add heft to this rumor until we see renders for this supposed model. In other words, there’s reason to hope you won’t be stuck with the Active-like designs we’ve seen so far. Just don’t count your chickens.
