TL;DR
  • Samsung Android updates have changed with the launch of the Galaxy S22 series.
  • Now, several device lines will see four Android upgrades and five years of security patches.
  • This is now the best update policy in the world of Android smartphones.

Today, Samsung launched its 2022 flagship smartphones and tablets. Along with these launches, the company also significantly overhauled its update policy for these new devices and some of its older models.

The big change with Samsung Android updates is the introduction of an extra Android upgrade along with an additional year of security patches. This makes it so supported devices will see a total of four Android upgrades and five years of patches.

This is now, officially, the best update commitment in the world of Android smartphones. Yes, it even surpasses the commitments of Google itself, which currently only offers three Android upgrades. Google does meet Samsung’s commitment of five years of security patches, though.

Samsung now is only one year behind the smartphone gold standard, which is that of Apple iPhones. Apple gives its iPhones at least five years of upgrades and updates, which is the best policy in the world of smartphones. Today’s Samsung Android updates news does suggest that Samsung could eventually get there.

Below, you’ll find the phones and tablets that will see this new policy.

  • 2022 devices:
    • Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra

  • 2021 devices:

Of the devices on that list, the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21 FE, and Galaxy Tab S8 series launched with Android 12 out of the box. That means they’ll see Android 13 this year, Android 14, Android 15, and Android 16.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 launched with Android 11. They have already received one of their Android upgrades in the form of Android 12. That means they’ll see Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15. They will likely not receive Android 16.
