TL;DR
  • Realme just launched a phone with an official Dynamic Island clone.
  • The company calls the feature “Mini Capsule.”

Apple’s Dynamic Island may be the envy of many Android users, but Android phone makers haven’t paid much heed to the feature. Why? Possibly because it wouldn’t serve a great purpose on an Android device. Most Android phones don’t have an awkward pill-shaped cutout that needs embellishing with a Dynamic Island-like feature. But for some reason, one Android phone maker thought it best to officially clone Apple’s Dynamic Island and market it as one of the key features of its new phone.

The $195 Realme C55 has launched in Indonesia with what the company is calling the “Mini Capsule.” The phone features a centered punch-hole selfie shooter, which is taken over by this Mini Capsule when it’s time to show notifications, charging status, and other information. Realme also plans to push an update to show a step counter and data usage stats in the area sometime in the future. Essentially, the feature is just a superficial UI element. Realme is not trying to smartly hide some FaceID sensors or other additional hardware like the dead space between the two display cutouts on the iPhone 14 Pro.

As for the rest of the device, the Realme C55 includes a 6.7-inch 90Hz LCD panel, the MediaTek Helio G88 chip, a dual rear camera setup with a 64MP primary shooter, a 5,000mAh battery, 33W charging, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB storage, and Android 13. Those are decent specs for a budget phone, especially the addition of the latest Android version. According to Realme’s Europe chief Francis Wong, the phone will launch in Europe soon.
