Razer is getting into the smart home game with its own app and platform

Razer wants to do more than offer gaming laptops and accessories — it wants to be the foundation of your smart home.

TL;DR
  • Razer is becoming a smart home platform with a mobile app and partnerships.
  • The app should launch in the first half of 2022 and focus on lighting.
  • Razer already has partners such as Nanoleaf and LIFX onboard.

While Razer is pretty firmly linked to PC gaming for most people, the company occasionally tries to extend its appeal into the broader tech universe. Its true wireless headphones are considered a decent buy, for instance.

Its latest overture, though, involves establishing a Razer smart home platform. This includes partnerships and a mobile app for central control.

The Razer smart home app will offer users a “suite of lighting effects” and the ability to “create an immersive environment that reacts with all their home entertainment,” in the company’s own words. This is similar to its existing Chroma RGB tech, which can mirror music, video, and games via a desktop app. The smart home app, though, will go a step further by breaking away from PCs and unifying control of a full suite of smart home accessories.

That’s the plan at least, as Razer hasn’t said what kinds of accessories it will support beyond lighting. Unfortunately, it may face an uphill battle getting vendors to add Razer compatibility on top of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and/or Apple HomeKit.

It has nevertheless started the Razer Chroma Smart Home Program to build compatibility. Two of its initial partners — Nanoleaf and LIFX — are well-known entities in the smart lighting space.

The Razer smart home app should launch sometime in the first half of 2022. The company hasn’t said which platforms it will support, but it will presumably be available for both Android and iOS.
