DxOMark is one of the more in-depth camera testing websites, putting smartphone cameras through a variety of testing scenarios. Now, the website has reviewed the OnePlus 8 Pro and issued its findings.

The website gave a score of 119 points to the phone, landing it in tenth place and knocking the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus out of the top ten. It also appeared in front of all the latest iPhone models, bar the yet-to-be-reviewed iPhone SE. This ranking means it’s just behind the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro and Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium (as well as the S20 Ultra and HUAWEI P40 Pro).

DxOMark awarded a photo score of 126 points to the phone, praising the device’s detail, accurate exposure, and low level of noise. It also praised the “fast and reliable” autofocus system, the color and detail when using the ultra-wide camera, and picture quality when using the flash.

It wasn’t all great though, as the testing company specifically lamented the phone’s white balance, highlight clipping in “challenging” scenes, artifacts in the edges of ultra-wide snaps, and the exposure and noise in low-light shots.

Furthermore, DxOMark felt that zoom was an area of improvement for the OnePlus 8 Pro, saying its zoom capabilities didn’t challenge top performers in this regard. Check out the website’s comparison below.

The OnePlus 8 Pro earned a score of 103 points for video, with DxOMark applauding its exposure, dynamic range, accurate colors, good stabilization, and the level of detail. It wasn’t all good though, as the website also noted minor autofocus issues, visible temporal noise, aliasing and other issues in highlights, slightly under-exposed shadows in HDR situations.

“By and large the OnePlus 8 Pro is a solid performer, too, with no serious weaknesses identified in our tests, and the primary camera is particularly good, thanks to excellent exposure and color, high detail, and well-controlled noise,” the firm wrote in its conclusion, while noting that zoom and ultra-wide performance wasn’t quite on par with the best.

“The OnePlus 8 Pro does excel for video, however, securing new top scores for video exposure and color and a top five overall video ranking in our database. Put all that together and the OnePlus 8 Pro is an excellent choice for serious smartphone photographers,” it concluded.
