Survey says this is the Pixel software non-negotiable that trumps exclusive AI features

When Google extended its OS update support to seven years with the Pixel 8, there was a collective cheer from the Android gallery. It was a hugely popular decision that other brands have since implemented across their device ranges. But after pushing this watermark a little higher, Google has turned its focus towards another software-related punt: AI.

Unlike older Pixels that still benefit from their extended software support windows, Google is not doling out its latest AI features to just any old Pixel. Instead, these novel smarts are limited to new devices with newer, more capable hardware.

Given how intertwined Google’s Android is with AI features, long-term software support might not have the same ring to it. As my colleague Karandeep wrote in a recent article, solving the OS update problem while issuing new, device-exclusive AI features is “like curing a disease while causing new symptoms.”

But what do our readers think about this new “dark side” of Pixel updates? We asked readers to vote in a recent poll to uncover what is more important to Pixel owners: Long-term OS support, new AI features, or perhaps something else entirely. The results are below.

We received over 3,300 votes in this poll, with one answer receiving an overwhelming majority, but “getting new AI features first” is certainly not it. Only 6% of respondents picked this particular answer as their most important Pixel checklist item.

In turn, 63.8% of voters believe “long-term OS support” far outweighs any other option here. This view is largely shared by readers in the comments.

Bringing new OS versions and APIs as well as security updates are way more important.

Reader bigjesse541 agrees:

I would be happy if they made Android on their own devices constantly stable. Most of my experience with the Pixel 10 Pro XL has been good, but there will be times things just break but most of the time it would resolve itself. Its ecosystem also needs a lot of love.

Reader bairdjacob76 touches on another important point:

It’s really sad when the only new features are all software related and Google refuses to update phones that were released last year because they’re trying to sell more phones.

While we did not include any hardware-related options in this particular poll, 7.5% believe “neither” long-term support for bleeding-edge AI features is the most important aspect of a Pixel.

Based on previous surveys, I’m sure that some respondents feel a larger battery, a faster Tensor chipset, or camera upgrades are far higher on their list of demands than OS updates or AI features. I’d certainly like to hear where you stand in the comments.

Importantly, 22.7% of respondents believe both long-term support and AI features are both important to the overall experience. It’s key to remember that not everyone is against Google’s AI push.
