You can finally try Google's AI tool that controls your Chrome browser for you
May 20, 2025

- Google’s Project Mariner AI web browser can now perform more advanced tasks, and more of them, simultaneously.
- Broader developer access to Mariner will be available later this summer.
- Anyone can try Project Mariner for themselves right now as part of the new Google AI Ultra subscription.
To no one’s surprise, this year’s Google I/O has been all about AI, AI, and more AI. Among all that AI talk are some updates to Google’s Project Mariner.
Announced last December, Mariner is an AI agent that can control Google Chrome on your behalf and perform specific browser tasks for you. You type in a command for what you want Mariner to do, and it handles everything automatically — including the ability to move your mouse cursor, navigate to different websites, select buttons/forms on said websites, and more.
While Project Mariner isn’t ready for a full release quite yet, it is getting a few updates to push it closer in that direction. Specifically, Google is adding new features and ramping up developer support. And, most importantly, Google is finally letting anyone (who’s willing to pay) try Mariner for themselves.
On the note of new features, Project Mariner can now utilize “a system of agents” that are capable of performing up to ten tasks simultaneously. In a new demo Google shared, we see a search example of “Look through my drive for my family Goulash recipe, and buy the items I need on Instacart.”
Mariner opens the person’s Drive account, finds and clicks on the recipe, identifies the necessary ingredients, and then goes to Instacart to start shopping for them. Whether this complex of a prompt works as quickly IRL as it does in the video remains to be seen, but it’s still mighty impressive nonetheless.
Next, Google is bringing Mariner directly into the Gemini API. Some select companies — including Browserbase, Cartwheel, and Automation Anywhere — are already playing with Project Mariner to see what they can do with it. Going forward, broader developer access will be available “this summer.” Additionally, Google says it will bring some of Mariner’s capabilities to select Google products through 2025.
If you want to play with Project Mariner, Google's AI Ultra plan is the only way to do so.
Last but certainly not least, Project Mariner is opening up to more non-developers, too. Specifically, Mariner is now included in Google’s AI Ultra plan — Google’s new flagship subscription that offers access to the company’s latest and most experimental AI features currently available.
AI Ultra will set you back $250/month, meaning it’s really only meant for the most dedicated of AI users. But if you want to play with Project Mariner for yourself, it’s currently the only way to do so.
