The internet user base in India has grown exponentially in recent years, helped along by the availability of low-cost smartphones and affordable data plans from network carriers and internet service providers. Internet freedom and security haven’t developed as quickly.
The 2017 Freedom on the Net report gives India a decent, but not great, score of 41 out of 100 (lower is better). As the country’s internet user base has grown, instances of cyber fraud, and identity, password, and bank theft have also increased.
Another big reason for the spotlight on great VPN services for Indian users is the “porn ban” that went into effect in October. Despite a failed attempt in 2015, the court order to block adult websites seems to be here to stay this time around, with almost every national and regional ISP blocking access to over 800 sites.
This is where a good virtual private network (VPN) service can make a world of difference. Here is our roundup of some of the best VPNs for India!
Ivacy – GREAT DEAL FOR A LIMITED TIME!
If price is of particular concern, VPNs don’t come much cheaper than Ivacy. It’s getting even cheaper over the Black Friday shopping season! BF might not officially kick off until the 29th, but this deal is live now — offering up to 90% off on service. For an upfront cost of $60 you get five years of service. That comes to just $.99 a month!
You get all the key features you’d expect with Ivacy, as well as a few extras like split tunneling. Ivacy’s server count isn’t as robust as the others on the list, but it has a good list of locations around the world, including India. The speeds are good enough to allow for media streaming and torrenting without any issues. Their recent partnerships even allow Netflix unblocking in seven regions encompassing the US, UK, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe, Germany, and France.
ExpressVPN sits at the top of a lot of best VPN lists, and for good reason. It offers everything you’d expect from a premium VPN service like a zero-logs policy, a large number of servers around the world, and impressive security features like Network Lock, DNS leak protection, and more. The app is easy to install and available on all major platforms — you can even set it up on routers, gaming consoles, and media streaming devices.
I found the speeds excellent and, more importantly, consistent during my review of ExpressVPN. It also allows you to do everything you want, like torrenting and media streaming. Media streaming includes access to the Netflix US catalog by connecting to a U.S. server, and I’m even able to watch Masterchef Australia on TenPlay by connecting to an Australian server. In both cases, the speeds have been more than good enough to stream content without any buffering. There are also servers in Chennai and Mumbai if you are looking to access Indian content while traveling abroad.
The only big downside to ExpressVPN is the price. It is one of the more expensive VPNs out there, with prices of $99.95 (~7250 rupees) for the annual plan, $59.95 (~4350 rupees) for the six-month plan, and $12.95 (~940 rupees) for the monthly plan. However, you can save 49 percent and get an additional three months free with the annual plan ($99.95 for 15 months) if you are an Android Authority reader. ExpressVPN is definitely a great VPN for India.
NordVPN is the best VPN for India if security and privacy are your biggest concerns. Your online activity stays completely private with its zero logging policy, IP and DNS leak protection, and Network and App kill switches. There are specialty servers for P2P and Anti-DDoS. For even more security, you can enable Double VPN, which runs everything through two servers. The apps also recognize if you are in a restricted location and load obfuscated servers.
Despite the heavy security features, NordVPN offers excellent speeds and low latency, as I found in my review. NordVPN features specialty servers for torrenting and Netflix as well, and I was able to easily stream video without any buffering issues. NordVPN has 13 servers in India, including 3 that support P2P, which is great since the best speeds are possible when connected to servers closest to you. The availability of Indian servers means that you can also continue to access local content when traveling outside India.
NordVPN is also quite affordable considering all it has to offer. It’s currently priced at $79 (~5730 rupees) for the two-year plan, $69 (~5005 rupees) for the annual plan, and $11.95 (~810 rupees) for the monthly plan. NordVPN also has a fantastic limited time deal, offering a three-year subscription for just $99 (~7180 rupees).
SaferVPN claims to be the fastest and simplest VPN for India – and really for anywhere in the world, and that certainly held true when I reviewed it. The app is very simple, with no bells and whistles. It’s very easy to install and connect to the VPN, and there are even specific servers for U.S. and U.K streaming.
The speeds are also as fast as more expensive options like ExpressVPN and NordVPN, if not faster, making it one of the best VPNs in India for speed. Of course, VPN connection speeds depend on a lot of factors, and there were some consistency issues with SaferVPN. Simply reconnecting to the same location again usually brought the speed up to the mark. SaferVPN also has servers in India, allowing for access to local content while you’re outside the country.
The good news is the SaferVPN offers a 24-hour trial period as well as a 30-day money-back guarantee, which should be more than enough time for you to figure out if this is the right VPN service for you. SaferVPN is currently priced at $78.96 (~5730 rupees) for the two-year plan, $65.88 (~4785 rupees) for the annual plan, and a monthly rate of $10.99 (~795 rupees). Like NordVPN, SaferVPN is also currently offering a special deal for a three-year subscription, which will set you back just $89.99 (~6530 rupees).
CyberGhost is all about ease of use and takes the guesswork out of server selection. It’s ideal for a first-time VPN for India users. The easy-to-use and self-explanatory UI is a positive, its zero logging policy is a huge plus and, at least with its long-term plans, it’s extremely affordable.
It’s not the fastest VPN service on this list, but it was nice to see the speed remain about the same regardless of which location you are connected to. Multiple attempts are sometimes required to get something to work (like unblocking a particular streaming service) or to get the speed up to the mark.
Overall though, additional features like App Protection, and built-in ad, tracker, and malware blocking make CyberGhost a great option. CyberGhost VPN is continuously adding more servers and locations around the world and it is only going to get better.
CyberGhost VPN’s subscription periods range from monthly to as long as three years. It starts at a relatively expensive $11.99 (~870 rupees) per month, but the price can drop to just $2.75 (~200 rupees) per month (billed at 7200 rupees for a three-year subscription). The annual and 2-year plans are priced at $59.98 (~4350 rupees) and $90.96 (~6600 rupees) respectively.
Special Offer: For a limited time, you can avail the special $2.75 rate for an 18-month plan (billed at $49.95) and enjoy a new half-yearly plan priced at $4.99 per month (billed at $29.94 every 6 months).
