TL;DR
  • Google quietly revealed that Call Screen capabilities are coming to seven more countries.
  • This will allow Pixel owners in those markets to suss out unwanted callers.

One of the coolest Pixel features is Call Screen functionality, which uses Google Assistant and transcription to suss out spam and other unwanted callers. The feature has only been available in Canada, Japan, and the US, but it’s now coming to a host of new markets.

Google quietly announced the expansion last week (h/t: 9to5Google), confirming that Call Screen functionality is now spreading to Pixel owners in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the UK.

It’s worth noting that this expansion applies to manual Call Screen functionality only rather than the automatic version. This means you’ll need to tap the “screen call” button when your phone rings.

Automatic screening, on the other hand, kicks in without user intervention when a phone number not in your contacts list calls you. Either way, Google Assistant will ask the caller who they are and why they’re calling, delivering a transcript for your convenience.

We’re glad to see one of the Pixel family’s best features come to more markets nonetheless. And we hope to see more calling-related features like Hold for Me and Direct My Call spread to more regions as well.

The Call Screen expansion also comes as the Pixel 6 range goes on sale this week in various markets. You can check out our Pixel 6 Pro review at the previous link.
