There's already a method for rooting the Google Nexus 7 tablet, though that one's somewhat tedious and cumbersome. It involves typing in commands and rebooting the tablet into various modes which makes the whole process a bit risky. However, there's a new one-click rooting tool for the device which is great for newbies who don't want to play with the command line.

Even before the release of the new talk of the town, the Google Nexus 7, XDA Developers member m.sabra had already figured out a way to gain root access on the device running on the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. Furthermore, the rooting tool doesn't only provide easy one-click root but also installs ClockworkMod Recovery for you, hitting two birds with one click. The tool also includes the drivers for your tablet, so you can run it right away.

If you are new to this stuff and you find the term “rooting” staggering, we suggest that you read “Rooting for dummies: A beginner’s guide to rooting your Android device.”  Plus, our layperson’s dictionary of rooting terms may also prove valuable if you're just starting out.

Instructions

  1. Extract the rooting toolkit package into a folder on your PC where you can easily find it. We recommend you to put the extraction folder on your Desktop.

  3. After installing the drivers, look for root.exe in the extracted folder.
  4. Run it by double-clicking the file. Follow the on-screen instruction to root your tablet.
  5. After rooting is finished, reboot your Google Nexus 7 and enjoy!

I maybe missing something, but the instructions fail to mention when to connect the Nexus 7 to the PC. I assume it’s after you install the drivers?

2 questions: Exactly WHEN do I connect the Nexus 7 to the PC? Also, I plan on rooting right out of the box, so if I don’t unlock the bootloader, I shouldn’t lose any date, correct?

Can this be applied to Nexus 7 upgraded OTA to Android 4.1.1?

    • Ackmanx

I just did it using the OTA Android 4.1.1 and it worked fine.

  • Onestar

Hi Once you rooted the nexus 7 what else is required to do in order to access a USB memory stick?

  • Ackmanx

I did it and it worked perfectly. My bootloader was locked when I started. Some things to note:

The script paused while waiting for the Nexus 7 to unlock the bootloader and wouldn’t continue until I agreed by touching Yes on the tablet. After that it continued and then the batch mentioned I had to agree to unlock the bootloader.

The script mentions after wiping data to re-enable USB debugging, but doesn’t mention having to go through the first-boot wizard again, which may confuse some if they were expecting to get to the home screen. I just completed the set up and then enabled it.

The script asks at end if you want “super user” or “supersu” but doesn’t explain what the differences are. So, I just picked super user being that’s what I’ve used in the past.

Will unlocking the bootloader for the nexus 7 cause data wipe of the device? I had experience this problem of data wipe after unlocking my galaxy nexus bootloader

The process gets stuck on “Checking ADB status” despite unplugging several times I cannot get past this stage; any ideas?

installed drivers OK, run root.exe and followed instructions. Seems to have installed OK but when I power on holding down the volume down button the nexus does not run clockworkmod? shouldn’t it?

  • Tony

Well it did all the process including asking which superuser to use. However all programs now say that the device is not rooted – Busybox, Titanium, Superuser etc. will not run.

  • ChopStickSamuri

Can someone help, I cant tell if its rooted.

    • jay

if it runs clockwork it is rooted

I tried other unlocking methods for my nexus 7 and this is the ONLY one that has worked for me. Much simpler too!
