Update, August 24, 2020 (02:30 PM ET): It appears the unwelcome outage of videoconferencing app Zoom is over (via Zoom’s Twitter). Zoom was down for several hours earlier today, causing havoc for business users as well as students using the tool for virtual classes.
Eric S. Yuan, the founder and CEO of Zoom, addressed the outage in an apology tweet. We’ve mirrored that below:
Today @zoom_us had a service disruption that affected many of our customers. We know the responsibility we have to keep your meetings, classrooms & important events running. I’m personally very sorry & we will all do our best to prevent this from happening in the future.

Original article, August 24, 2020 (09:30 AM ET): We saw Spotify go down for users last week and Gmail and its productivity suite experience woes sometime after. Now, it’s Zoom’s turn to suffer from connectivity issues.
Multiple users have reported issues with the popular video conferencing service, with the company now noting a partial outage of its Zoom Meetings and Zoom Video Webinars features on its status dashboard.
“We have received reports of users being unable to visit the Zoom website (zoom.us) and unable to start and join Zoom Meetings and Webinars. We are currently investigating and will provide updates as we have them,” read a statement on the dashboard.
Users on popular outage tracking website Downdetector have reported that the service is disrupted in the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Romania, Russia, and the US. Some users also note that they were able to access Zoom via the mobile or desktop apps as opposed to their web clients. For what it’s worth, I was able to conduct a meeting here in South Africa via the phone app with a colleague in Germany.
