You might think you’ve seen everything there is to see on YouTube, but it’s possible that you’ve never even glimpsed YouTube Playables. Playables are interactive games that live in their own section of the Explore menu and show up in the Home feed, search results, and other places. Now, YouTube has partnered with organizations and creators for six new Playables that have a more educational bent.
The majority of the latest Playables are geared toward elementary-age and older kids, with some games that adults can enjoy too. The full lineup is:
- SuperNova by Black Girls Code
Nova has a gig tonight. But her band mates had to cancel at the last minute. Help Nova audition new bandmates, jam to new beats, and unlock secret choruses. - Reset Mode by Jed Foundation
Practice guided breathing and mindfulness exercises designed to help you de-stress, reset, and recharge. - Newton’s Glider by Khan Academy
Test your intuition for inertia and physics by steering pucks through directional force puzzles. - Lure of the Labyrinth: Vending Machine presented by Math with Mr. J
Developed in partnership with Maryland Public Television, the MIT Education Arcade, and FableVision Studios
A monster needs your help to buy a snack on their break, but what is the value of these coins? Learn how to think like a mathematician and buy the right snack in this classic math-based puzzle. - BackTrack Pro by Ted-Ed
Aspiring musicians can discover how to construct chord progressions to build a song. - Elements of Truth by Veritasium
Challenge your scientific reasoning with Veritasium’s hit trivia game, featuring confidence-based scoring.
As with all of the Playables, these are free, available on YouTube’s apps or on the web, and don’t require any downloads. Players can save their game progress and track their all-time best scores.
YouTube currently has hundreds of Playables that are available in over 80 countries. Some games have added functionality, like multiplayer mode. Legendary Pictures recently used Playables to promote its “Street Fighter” movie, with a version of the trailer that lets you punch and kick your way through it.
