Xiaomi introduces 30W wireless charging, set for Mi 9 Pro 5G
Xiaomi says a phone with a 4,000mAh battery will hit 50 percent capacity in 25 minutes due to this tech, and 100 percent capacity in 69 minutes. Those are pretty impressive figures for wired charging, but unprecedented for wireless charging.
Xiaomi is also selling a 30W wireless charging pad to go with the improved charging speeds, as well as a 20W smart tracking wireless charging pad. The latter peripheral automatically tracks and aligns its charging coils with the smartphone, ostensibly so users don’t have to figure out when charging is taking place. Furthermore, it says 30W wireless charging and the accessories will debut on the upcoming Mi 9 Pro 5G.
The affordable smartphone manufacturer isn’t stopping at 30W either, as it confirmed that it’s begun testing 40W wireless charging too. This would put it on par with wired charging solutions seen on the likes of the Huawei P30 Pro, and just under the Galaxy Note 10 Plus‘s 45W wired charging (although these brands are undoubtedly investigating faster solutions too).
Fast reverse charging and more
Xiaomi also unveiled fast reverse wireless charging, as the company joins Huawei and Samsung in offering the technology on its phones. This means you can charge other wirelessly charging phones and accessories by simply placing it on the back of your Xiaomi phone.
This new tech differs from Huawei and Samsung’s offerings by delivering 10W charging speeds. Our own testing shows Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro delivers reverse wireless charging of between 2.5W and 3W, while Samsung’s effort charges devices at 3.5W to 4W.
The manufacturer’s push for wireless charging doesn’t stop here though, as it’s announced the formation of a wireless charging consortium with several other Chinese companies. The consortium was formed with a view to “further expand and integrate wireless charging into everyday life scenarios.”
We’ll need to wait for the Mi 9 Pro 5G to see 30W wireless charging on a commercial device, but it might just take the fight to wired solutions if the charging times hold up.
