Verizon 5G is coming to New York City soon (if you live in the right area)
Verizon is one of the few carriers globally using mmWave 5G technology, and it’s slowly been expanding its tiny footprint in the US. Now, the company has announced that it’s bringing 5G to New York City from September 26.
Verizon 5G coverage will be limited to parts of downtown, uptown, midtown, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. This roll-out seemingly illustrates one of the challenges of mmWave technology right now, as it doesn’t offer the blanket coverage of sub-6Ghz 5G and Gigabit LTE connectivity.
New York City’s addition means Verizon 5G mobile service is now available in 11 US cities. But the carrier says it hopes to offer the service in 30 cities by the end of 2019, focusing on downtown areas and public spaces at first. The news also comes after the carrier confirmed that it has brought 5G connectivity to numerous NFL stadiums.
Other cities previously confirmed to get Verizon 5G include Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Houston, Kansas City, Little Rock, Memphis, San Diego, and Salt Lake City.
