Upcoming HBO series you'll want to check out when they drop

While streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have given it a run for its money, HBO remains the premier home of prestige TV. With new shows to check out every week, it can be hard to keep track of what’s in the pipeline. That’s why we’ve assembled a list of the most exciting upcoming HBO series to look out for.

With the launch of Max, taking the place of Warner Bros. Discovery streamer HBO Max, there’s been a lot of cross-branding of HBO series that will also be streaming on Max. There’s admittedly a fair amount of overlap, but HBO remains a prestige cable brand. As such, we’re keeping upcoming HBO shows separate from Max Originals for now.

The Franchise

Release date: 2024

In this satire from Armando Iannucci and Sam Mendes, a big-budget superhero film’s messy production is shown through the eyes of its dysfunctional cast and crew. The director fights with corporate orders while the lead actor’s ego threatens the shoot. The off-screen drama might be bigger than the movie itself. Will this troubled production succeed or fail?

House of the Dragon season 2

Release date: June 2024

The fight between the Targaryens gets worse as the kingdom is split and dragons fill the skies. Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon must deal with dangerous alliances and betrayals as they try to claim the Iron Throne. As more people die and the realm is close to collapsing, who will win this war?

The Penguin

Release date: 2024

Oswald Cobblepot starts his brutal rise from small-time criminal to crime boss in Gotham’s dark underworld. Set after The Batman, this crime story follows Cobblepot as he outsmarts enemies, makes tense partnerships, and gets more involved in the city’s corruption. But as his power grows, so do the dangers, and the Penguin must use all his skills to stay alive in Gotham’s deadly underworld.

Hellraiser

Release date: TBD

HBO is expanding the world of Clive Barker’s 1987 film about interdimensional beings who explore the limits of human experience through physical torture with this upcoming HBO series. Deadline reports that funnyman Danny McBride is among the executive producers of the show. The pilot, and several episodes, will be directed by David Gordon Green, who directed 2018’s Halloween movie reboot. The series will exist separately from the 2022 Hulu original feature film reboot of Hellraiser.

Parasite

Release date: TBD

Parasite, the surprise winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020, is currently in development as an upcoming HBO series. The movie’s writer and director Bong Joon Ho will help develop the series, alongside director Adam McKay (The Big Short, Don’t Look Up). Set in the same narrative universe as the film, the series will not be a continuation but instead a new story exploring similar themes of wealth and inequality. While Tilda Swinton was at one point attached to star, she has since moved on from the project, which remains in development.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight

Release date: 2025

The second confirmed Game of Thrones spinoff at HBO after the popular House of the Dragon, this prequel series will be based on George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” books. Martin is serving as executive producer on the new series, set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series will see a knight and his squire, a young Targaryen, after the age of dragons has ended and the Targaryens still hold the throne. While there’s no word on when it will air, the upcoming HBO series is sure to draw huge viewer numbers.

Snow (working title)

Release date: 2028

Continuing its Game of Thrones streak, HBO is also in early development for a sequel series that would center on the fan-favorite character Jon Snow. The Hollywood Reporter stated earlier in 2022 that Thrones actor Kit Harington is set to reprise his role as Snow in this series. The honorable warrior and leader was last seen in the final episode of Game of Thrones joining the Wildlings in exile north of The Wall after killing his lover (and aunt) Daenerys Targaryen. A sequel series means we could also potentially see the return of other Game of Thrones actors reprising their roles.

Little Films

Release date: TBD

From Saturday Night Live alum Julio Torres comes this new HBO comedy series, currently in development. Over six episodes, Torres tells the story of when he lost a golden oyster. Shot entirely on stages, the series finds Torres going on different adventures and encountering different people in a dysfunctional New York City.

Get Millie Black

Release date: TBD

Co-produced with the UK’s Channel 4, Get Millie Black follows Jamaican-born detective Millie-Jean Black as she returns home to join the Jamaican Police Force when she’s forced out of Scotland Yard. There, she investigates missing persons cases, but things get complicated when one of her case intersects with that of Scotland Yard detective Luke Holborn, now in Kingston.

The Son

Release date: TBD

From Dune director Denis Villeneuve and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, The Son is an upcoming HBO miniseries set in Oslo. When a convict suspects foul play in his father’s alleged suicide, he escapes to look for answers and soon finds himself in the middle of a massive conspiracy.

Scanners

Release date: TBD

David Cronenberg’s breakout 1981 hit is getting the miniseries treatment at HBO. Black Mirror writer William Bridges will serve as showrunner on the project, which sees two women on the run from agents with telepathic and telekinetic abilities as they work to uncover and take down a vast conspiracy.

The Vanishing Half

Release date: TBD

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Brit Bennett, The Vanishing Half is one of the most exciting upcoming shows at HBO. The miniseries tells the story of two twin sisters who grew up together in a tight-knit Black community but broke apart and have lived very different lives as adults. The two are brought back together by unexpected events that reveal powerful truths about their identities. The series is produced by Issa Rae.
