TL;DR
  • TCL has announced new phones and a tablet at MWC 2023.
  • Its latest slate includes the company’s new NXTPAPER 2.0 display technology.
  • A trio of new TCL 40 series smartphones also land for US users.

TCL is well known for taking a few design risks. We were given a glimpse of its immediate future earlier this year. Now at MWC 2023, the company has unveiled its latest set of mobile devices and upgraded NXTPAPER tech.

The TCL NXTPAPER 11 is the first addition and lands with an 11-inch 2K display with NXTPAPER 2.0 tech, which is essentially a matte screen. The second-generation display technology still focuses on eye care, with a paper-like flicker-free panel, but now packs a brightness rating of 500 nits. That is great news, considering our biggest critique of the NXTPAPER Phone Concept handled at CES 2023 was its lack of shine.

Internally, the new slate packs an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60T chipset mated to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That combo should suit most users’ purposes, from light multitasking to on-the-go streaming. Adding to the NXTPAPER 11’s allure is an 8,000mAh battery.

On paper, that glare-free display makes it seem like a solid Kindle alternative and it has all the qualities that should make it one. As for the price, the device will cost $249 when it launches globally in May, but there’s no word on US availability just yet. In any event, you can read our TCL NXTPAPER 11 hands-on for our initial impressions.

TCL’s also offering a slightly cheaper tablet devoid of the nifty display tech. The TCL Tab 11 packs the same chipset, storage, and battery lineup for $179.

As for its smartphone lineup, TCL is bringing four new models to the 40 series.

Headlining the list, the TCL 40X 5G uses a MediaTek Dimensity 700 backbone to support a 6.56-inch HD+ 90Hz LCD screen. At the rear, you’ll find a 50MP primary camera with two 2MP co-snappers. Sitting lightly below the pecking order, the TCL 40XE 5G boasts the same display as its sibling but employs a 13MP main camera alongside the two 2MP rear shooters. An 8MP selfie camera can be found on the two devices. Both phones are US exclusives and will retail for $169 and $199, respectively.

For those craving a slightly larger display, the TCL 40XL lives up to its title. It brings a larger 6.75-inch HD+ display with a 50MP main camera and a 5,000mAh battery. Buyers also get 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, but they’ll have to look elsewhere for 5G connectivity. Despite its size, it’ll cost slightly less at $149.

Finally, TCL announced a $119 Android 13 handset dubbed the TCL 406. Specifically available for the prepaid audience, the phone packs a 6.6-inch HD+ display.
