Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus Oreo build leaked with Dolby Atmos support

We’ve only just received confirmation from Samsung that the Galaxy S8 Oreo beta program will end on January 15th, but it seems that some lucky users are getting their updates early.

An Oreo build for both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus appeared today on Reddit including all the features you’d expect from Android 8.0 Oreo, as well as the January Android security patches.

It’s worth noting the two build are only compatible with the Snapdragon 835 variant of both of Samsung’s flagships. In addition, while this is almost certainly an official, non-beta build, it is not the final version as it won’t be certified by the Google Play Store.

As well as Oreo features like picture-in-picture mode, notification bubbles, and much more, the builds also add Dolby Atmos support to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.

After installing the firmware, a Dolby Atmos option will appear in the Settings menu complete with a variety of options to fine-tune the audio experience with new EQ profiles called Auto, Movie, Music, and Voice.

As is to be expected, the builds are quite buggy, so much so that the Dolby Atmos support doesn’t actually work according to some Reddit users. That being said, if you’re happy to take a risk, you can sideload the build onto your own Snapdragon Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus and give it a try.

To do so, you’ll first need to make sure your device is running Android Oreo beta BQL1 and then flash the new build onto your phone (links available in the original Reddit thread here). This is done at your own risk, of course, so be sure to back up all of your precious data beforehand.

Alternatively, the leaked build and Samsung’s confirmation that the beta program will end soon is a fairly obvious sign that a stable official Orea build is on the way in the coming weeks, so you might be better off waiting just a little longer. Keep an eye on our update tracker!
