TL;DR
  • The Samsung Galaxy S23 series will reportedly gain satellite connectivity.
  • It’s believed Samsung is working on sending texts and images via satellite.
  • Apple and HUAWEI don’t support image transmission over satellite.

We’ve already seen Apple and Huawei offer satellite connectivity on their newest flagship phones, but it sounds like the Galaxy S23 series could be next in line to gain the feature.

Korea’s ET News outlet reports that Samsung is developing satellite communication tech for the Galaxy S23 series, with Iridium as the apparent satellite partner.

The outlet adds that Samsung is working on transmitting text messages and low quality images via satellite. The ability to send images seems like a step above Apple and HUAWEI’s satellite communication efforts. Both of these brands only allow you to send an emergency text and location info via satellite.

This news also comes after T-Mobile announced a partnership with Starlink for satellite communication. This will be limited to SMS, MMS, and “supported” messaging apps when the beta program kicks off at the end of 2023. However, the duo also confirmed that they’re pursuing voice and data coverage via satellite.

Nevertheless, we look forward to official confirmation of Samsung’s take on the service if it’s indeed coming. We’re also looking forward to details such as pricing and geographical availability.
