Samsung won't update Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus anymore
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5 updates and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus updates are now discontinued.
- The most recent August updates for both devices will be their last.
- There could be a critical update issued in the future if necessary, but regular updates won’t come.
If you’re looking forward to new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 updates or security patches for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, unfortunately, you’re out of luck. The most recent updates in August of this year will be the last for both devices.
Samsung removed both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus from its list of devices that will receive future Android updates, via SamMobile.
The removal of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus isn’t too surprising, as both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge were removed from Samsung’s update list back in March. The S6 Edge Plus got to hang around for a few extra months, but its removal was imminent.
The Galaxy Note 5’s removal was also expected, as the device is over three-years-old at this point. Samsung promises updates for its flagship devices for a minimum of two years, so the Galaxy Note 5 already got an extra year of updates before it was pulled from the active list.
There is still a chance that either device could receive an update in the future if there is a critical flaw in the software that needs to be patched. However, that scenario is unlikely.
Going forward, if you want your Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus to get new Android updates, you will have to flash a custom ROM such as LineageOS. If you’re interested in giving that a shot, we have a cool beginner’s guide to the process here.
