TL;DR
  • The Samsung DeX Pad, a rumored Samsung accessory, has leaked in some render images.
  • The peripheral is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy S9, and allow it to connect to a computer monitor, mouse and keyboard for a desktop-like experience.
  • The unit looks like it will have some small design changes compared to the last DeX, but we don’t yet know what it will be like to use.

The Samsung DeX Pad, a new peripheral rumored to launch alongside the Galaxy S9, has been spotted in a couple of leaked render images. The pictures were published by @evleaks in a tweet yesterday, giving us potentially the first look at the new accessory’s design.

The Samsung DeX Pad, like the Samsung DeX that arrived with the Galaxy S8 last year, is expected to allow users to hook up their smartphone to a monitor, keyboard and mouse to use it like a desktop computer. That’s the idea, anyway—you can read how successful the last one was here.

The DeX Pad looks like it will have a few changes in store compared to its predecessor: the S9 will seemingly lie flat on the dock instead of upright like the Galaxy S8, while the ethernet port has also been dropped, meaning you’ll likely have to rely on Wi-Fi. Further, there appears to be some kind of vent where the S9 would rest on top of the device, presumably for cooling.

The connections you’ll find on the device now are two USB ports, an HDMI port, a USB Type-C port and the male USB Type-C connector for the Galaxy S9 to plug into. None of this hints at what kind of functional changes we can expect, however, and it’s how the DeX Pad operates that’s going to make or break it.

The leak also gives us another look at the design of the Samsung Galaxy S9, which indicates that it will include a headphone jack (hurray) and a bottom-facing speaker.

We should learn more about the DeX Pad from MWC 2018 at the end of this month. For all the previous rumors we’ve heard regarding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9, hit the link.
