TL;DR
  • A handful of Samsung camera features originally launched on the Galaxy S22 series are coming to older phones.
  • Phones as old as the Galaxy S10 series will see at least some of these features.
  • The update will start this month and continue through June for some older models.

When a new Galaxy S smartphone lands, it usually comes with a few exclusive features. However, only some of those features are dependent on the advanced hardware inside the device, which means older phones could also get them.

With that in mind, some Samsung camera features from the latest Galaxy S22 series are on their way to older Samsung phones (h/t PhoneArena). That includes phones as far back as the Galaxy S10 series, although that will only be a select few features.

The updates will start to roll out this month. However, some older models will see the new Samsung camera features land in June. Here’s what you can expect:

Samsung camera features: Improved night portraits

With a Galaxy S22 phone, you can get great night photography results using Portrait Mode through the telephoto lens. This feature will make its way to the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Auto-framing

Getting a shot with all your friends in it can be a bit tricky, which is where auto-framing comes in. It zooms in and out and crops things automatically to get everyone in the frame in a good spot. This is coming to the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and all Galaxy Z Flip models.

Additionally, Samsung will eventually bring auto-framing to video calls, too. That will roll out to the Galaxy S21 and S20 families along with their respective FE variants. It will also come to the Galaxy Note 20 series, all Galaxy Z Flip models, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Fold 3, the Galaxy S10 series, and the Galaxy Note 10 series. The Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite models are also included here.

Video call effects

Video calls are a huge part of daily life nowadays, and Samsung has camera features that can make your calls more fun or simply better in quality. On the Galaxy S22 series, you can use custom backgrounds and custom mic control settings in Google Meet, Google Duo, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Zoom, Messenger, and more.

These features are coming to a ton of phones, including the Galaxy S21 series (including FE), the Galaxy S20 series (including FE), the Galaxy Note 20 series, all Galaxy Z Flip models, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy S10 series (including Lite), and the Galaxy Note 10 series (including Lite).

Social network camera enhancements

Some social media apps have cameras built-in, and these often are not as good as the phone’s default camera app. Samsung helps out here by applying some of its optimizations and effects to specific social camera systems, including Snapchat and Instagram.

You’ll find this on the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 only.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 improvements

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will get support for Samsung’s Expert RAW app. This app gives users complete control over all the lenses on the phone and doesn’t apply Samsung’s effects and optimizations. Currently, this is only available on the Galaxy S22 series and the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but Samsung’s foldable flagship from last year will get it soon.
