This Samsung 4K display was made specifically for VR

VR is all the hype in 2016. We have plenty of players on board, and Google has announced Daydream, which is a much improved successor to Cardboard. It seems the true VR wars are nearing and you can bet mobile giant Samsung will be a huge part of this battle.

The Korean manufacturer is already a big player in VR, thanks to its Samsung Gear VR headset, but this week they were at Display Week in San Francisco showing us what’s coming next.

They showed us the next step in VR technology, a screen that is made specifically with virtual reality in mind. It’s a 5.5-inch 4K panel with a 3840 x 2160 resolution. We are not sure exactly what makes it a VR-focused screen, though… aside from the high resolution. But that is a very important factor, in and of itself.

When looking at screens so closely, pixels become very apparent. We are sure VR content will look much crisper in a 4K screen. Regardless, this display is no bad contender in other areas. It has an amazing 806 PPI pixel density, 350 nit brightness and covers 97% of the whole color gamut.

The guys at UploadVR got to take a look at it first-hand and claim it looks stunning, but that the frame rate seems to be lower than current screens. Then again, Samsung representatives state this is but a prototype, so things will probably get better when the panel is ready for prime time.

Will we see this in an upcoming Samsung Galaxy handset? Very likely. Some suggest this screen could probably make it to the Samsung Galaxy Note 6, as some rumors say that phone will have a 4K display. The only discrepancy is that the Note series is known for having screens larger than 5.5 inches. All we can do now is wait and see what time uncovers.
