The OnePlus 9 series is nearly upon us, but it won’t be the only device the company launches this year. Rumors suggest that the firm’s working on the OnePlus Nord 2 — a phone that could feature a major silicon tweak.

Instead of adopting Qualcomm-made hardware like the previous Nord, the second iteration will allegedly employ a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. It would be the first MediaTek-powered phone in OnePlus’ history, but also mark the OnePlus Nord 2 as a potential flagship killer.

But what do readers think of this possible change? In our initial reporting of the rumor, we asked our readers if they’d purchase a MediaTek-powered OnePlus phone. Here’s how the votes were cast.

Would you buy a OnePlus phone with a MediaTek chipset?

OnePlus Nord 2 chipset poll results

The poll fell just shy of 2,000 votes, but there is a clear majority nonetheless. Just under 61% of respondents say they’re open to purchasing a OnePlus phone with a MediaTek chipset. Around 39% of respondents are against this idea.

Although MediaTek has had something of a perception problem in the last decade, the firm’s current crop of chips is nothing to be sniffed at. The Dimensity 1200, in particular, would give the Nord 2 a solid platform on which to build. Its feature set includes 5G+5G standby smarts, Bluetooth 5.2 support, and support for a 168Hz refresh rate with an FHD+ panel.

Adopting the fastest available MediaTek silicon could result in a considerable performance leap for the Nord series. However, would readers be as accepting of this move if it were a flagship OnePlus phone? That remains to be seen.

Here’s what you had to say

  • Eric Young: I remember even before the launch of the first OnePlus Nord, there was news that it will come with a MediaTek 5G processor! but better late than never, I think the Dimensity 1200 is quite competitive in terms of performance & specs.
  • Cyco: Just bring it to America and don’t put worthless cameras on.
  • Andrew Johnson: Yeah, this time its MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset that could be a part of the smartphone and really interesting choice by the brand.

That’s it for this OnePlus Nord 2 chipset poll. Thanks to everyone for voting and commenting. If you have any additional comments about the poll results or OnePlus’ rumored chipset plans, let us know in the comments below.
