TL;DR
  • OnePlus has confirmed that the Nord 2 5G is coming.
  • It also revealed that the phone is powered by the Dimensity 1200 chipset.

The OnePlus Nord was the manufacturer’s first budget phone in years, and it was definitely one of the best mid-range devices of 2020. OnePlus has released a slew of Nord devices since then, but you could definitely argue that the original Nord still reigns supreme.

Now, OnePlus has issued a joint press release with MediaTek, confirming that the Nord 2 5G is coming. Furthermore, the release reveals that the new phone will be powered by the Dimensity 1200 5G processor. This confirms previous rumors of MediaTek flagship power for the new mid-range phone.

The phone manufacturer has worked with MediaTek to deliver several AI enhancements for the new chipset. Therefore, the two companies have decided that the processor will be called the Dimensity 1200 AI rather than just the Dimensity 1200. OnePlus says the Nord 2 5G will offer AI-powered improvements like better imaging performance, display tweaks, and other enhancements.

More specifically, the manufacturer is touting improvements like SDR-to-HDR conversion for content, standard definition to HD conversion for video, smarter automatic brightness, live HDR effects for video recording, and the ability to recognize up to 22 photo scenarios. OnePlus also notes the ability to play games like Brawl Stars at a high refresh rate, hinting at a high refresh rate screen. MediaTek has previously claimed that the Dimensity 1200 supports features like SDR-to-HDR and HDR video, so we’re not sure how OnePlus’s take on these features differ from the stock support.

“At OnePlus, we are committed to sharing the best technology with the world, and the OnePlus Nord line reaffirms this mission in a more accessible price category,” OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau was quoted as saying in the release.

“The fast and smooth smartphone experience is an integral part of what makes OnePlus unique, and we are always seeking new ways and technologies that allow us to bring that experience to more users.”

There’s no official word on a launch date just yet, but frequent tipster Mukul Sharma previously claimed that a launch will take place in the last 10 days of July. More specifically, he mooted an event on July 24.

We’ve seen plenty of Nord 2 rumors and leaks in recent months. Some of the more notable rumored specs include a 90Hz OLED panel, a 4,500mAh battery, and a triple rear camera system. It’s believed that the triple camera consists of a 50MP main shooter, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP sensor. That 50MP sensor in particular sounds pretty intriguing, so here’s hoping the Nord 2 delivers a big image quality upgrade.
