TL;DR
  • OnePlus is awarding the first 37 customers to buy the OnePlus 5T with stars named after them.
  • The customers also receive a personalized Star Wars constellation and a certificate of ownership.
  • Purchasing the naming rights to a star is normally about $35.

OnePlus is known for its interesting marketing techniques. When the company was young it had some missteps, but it seems to have learned its lesson. Now the company just does fun stuff like naming stars after people when they buy a special OnePlus 5T.

The first 37 customers of the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition are getting another special gift. The customers will receive a star named after them and a personalized Star Wars constellation, which will be presented with a certificate of ownership. The company teamed up with the Star Register to make it all happen.

If you’re wondering, and I know you are, it normally costs about $35 to register a star. According to the Star Register, the stars are generally visible from Earth and you can choose which constellation they’re in. You can also name a Super Nova or a Twin Star too. Is this at all official? No, but you do get a cool certificate to show off to your friends, so that’s something.

Why is the OnePlus 5T priced at $500?

But, if it were me, I’d be showing off the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition that I bought instead of a star certificate. The limited edition phone has a special white back with a red logo. It also comes with some special Star Wars wallpapers and a cool Easter egg in the box. Unfortunately, it’s pretty hard to come by. The device is only being sold in India, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden.
