TL;DR
  • HMD Global has trademarked the Nokia 8 Sirocco name in a bid to resurrect old but iconic Nokia brands.
  • The Nokia 8 Sirocco will build upon the original Nokia 8 and adds an OLED screen, dual selfie cameras, and additional storage.
  • More details about the Nokia 8 Sirocco as well the Nokia 9 can be expected in the run up to MWC 2018.

HMD Global is looking to bring back fond memories of yesteryear by resurrecting well known Nokia brands. The company has trademarked a new Nokia phone with model number TA-1005 as the ‘Nokia 8 Sirocco’. Incidentally, TA-1005 was the speculated model number for the much anticipated Nokia 9, which is expected to be unveiled during MWC 2018.

Here’s why I think Nokia 8 is the top choice for a mid-range flagship smartphone
Features

This is a throwback of sorts to the Nokia 8800 Sirocco from 2006, which was a premium version of the Nokia 8800 (sliding phones, anyone?). It featured a glossy steel body along with a 262K color TFT display that sported a sapphire glass covering. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is likely to feature an LG-made OLED display, dual-selfie cameras and added storage. The rest of the specs such as the Snapdragon 835 SoC, RAM, primary cameras etc. are expected to carry over from the original Nokia 8.

This is not the first time HMD is trying to resurrect iconic Nokia brands, though. We saw the Nokia 3310 don a new avatar last year and while there are some modern additions, it tried to stay true to its classic roots. Also, true to Nokia’s legacy, HMD is looking to scale the feature set across a wide price range while still promising the durability and reliability that the Nokia name stood for. The revival of old brands should strike a chord with fans of the erstwhile cellular behemoth and hopefully, HMD will do more than enough justice to these iconic names. We cannot wait to find out.
