Next year's Motorola Signature could be the most important Android phone of 2027

While all eyes were on Apple last week, Motorola quietly (and accidentally) teased its next flagship Android phone this past Wednesday. The US Motorola website briefly displayed a pop-up for the “Signature 27,” offering a brief glimpse of the phone’s camera housing, accompanied by the tagline “A new perspective is coming.”

The Signature 27 teaser has since disappeared, but what it suggests can’t be ignored: Motorola is working on a new flagship Android phone, and given that the teaser was found on Motorola’s US website, it’s very likely that this new Signature phone will launch in the United States.

You might argue that another slab phone isn’t nearly as interesting as whatever new Razrs Motorola is cooking up for 2027, but I’d argue that the Signature 27 could actually be Motorola’s most important smartphone of next year — if not the most important Android phone, regardless of manufacturer.

What are we expecting from the Signature 27?

Admittedly, details on the Signature 27 are pretty slim at this point. Other than the teaser image of the phone’s rear camera sensor and the Signature 27 name, that’s basically all we know about the phone right now. However, we can make some assumptions based on its predecessor.

The Motorola Signature was announced in January and was the first phone to introduce the “Signature” branding. Similar to the original idea behind Motorola’s Edge phones, the Motorola Signature marked a return to form for Motorola in its quest to create a true flagship, non-folding Android phone.

And you know what? Motorola did a bang-up job with the Signature.

Basically everything you could ask for in a 2026 flagship Android phone is present in the Signature. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip and 16GB of RAM, with 512GB of storage. No, it doesn’t have the “Elite” version of Qualcomm’s current Gen 5 silicon, but as we found in our testing, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is a pretty fantastic chipset in its own right.

On the front of the Motorola Signature is a 6.8-inch OLED panel with a ridiculous 165Hz refresh rate. Around back are triple 50MP camera sensors for the main, ultrawide, and telephoto shooters. It’s the exact same camera system found on the Razr Fold, which is to say that it’s excellent.

You also get a big 5,200mAh battery, super-fast 90W wired charging, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. All of that is crammed into a chassis that weighs just 186 grams (40 grams lighter than the Pixel 11 Pro XL) and comes in a trio of gorgeous PANTONE colors/finishes.

The best part? The Signature is one of the few Motorola phones that’s promised seven years of Android OS upgrades and security patches — filling in what’s usually one of the weakest aspects of any Moto smartphone.

Assuming Motorola doesn’t completely reinvent the wheel with the Signature 27, it’s safe to assume it’ll follow many (if not all) of the ideals set by the first Signature. In other words, it’ll have an excellent Snapdragon chip, plenty of RAM/storage, a great camera setup, a big battery, fast charging, a unique design, and long-term software support.

The biggest drawback of the Signature is that it never saw an official US release, but if the Signature 27 teaser is anything to go by, that won’t be the case next year. And that’s huge, because a new flagship Motorola phone for the US couldn’t come at a better/worse time.

A new Motorola flagship in the US is needed more than ever

It’s no surprise that the US is light on Android flagship competition, but it really struck me recently just how bad things are right now.

While writing my Pixel 11 Pro review, I struggled to come up with much of anything when it came time to discussing alternatives. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the most obvious choice, and it’s a very good phone, but there really isn’t much beyond that. There’s the regular Pixel 11, but that’s still a Google Pixel phone. What if you want another choice that’s not something from Samsung or Google?

As it stands, you really don’t have one. Sure, you could look into a phone like the Motorola Razr Ultra, but then you’re getting into the world of foldables, which you may not be interested in. The Nothing Phone 3 exists, but it’s well over a year old now and has some notable downsides compared to Google’s and Samsung’s latest flagships. And with OnePlus officially pulled out of North America, the OnePlus 15 is no longer a viable option.

So, if you’re shopping for a non-folding flagship Android phone, you really only have two choices: Google and Samsung. Have those companies released great smartphones this year? Yes! But that’s not nearly enough choice. OnePlus used to be that reliable third option, but those days are behind us.

And that’s why the Motorola Signature 27 is so vitally important.

Flagship Android phones shouldn’t run through just two channels. Someone else needs to be there to push Google and Samsung to do better. You need another choice to consider when spending upwards of $1,000 on your next smartphone. If the Motorola Signature 27 really is headed to the US next year, it could be that third choice. And if it takes the foundation of the first Signature and improves upon it, it could be a really excellent third choice.

The Signature 27 wouldn’t instantly solve the drought of US Android flagships, but it would make the market significantly healthier. It would mean you aren’t reliant on Samsung and Google to release high-end, premium Android phones you want to buy. And no matter where your preferences lie, I think we can all agree that we need a phone like the Motorola Signature 27 now more than ever.
