Google has a fix in the works for its Nest Doorbell identity crisis
Sep 22, 2026 — 4:20 PM ET

- Nest Doorbells are encountering an odd bug that makes them speak in a US accent, regardless of settings.
- Users have suggested a few solutions, like temporarily adding US English as a second language.
- Google now confirms its awareness of the bug, and shares that a fix is in progress.
Ding-dong! Language confusion calling! Earlier this week, we learned about a weird new glitch that was reportedly impacting Nest Doorbell owners. Owners who have been using the Nest Doorbell abroad, and all configured to converse in their local accent, suddenly found their Doorbells switching back to an American tone. While that still doesn’t seem to be fixed, we’ve got a fresh update to share.
Users had already offered a few potential fixes, suggesting temporarily assigning US English as a secondary language, but we hadn’t heard anything from Google. Today a representative has finally popped up in one of the original Reddit threads, confirming the problem and the company’s awareness of it:
Our team is aware of the issue and is actively working on a fix. We’ll circle back here when the fix has rolled out. Thanks for your patience.
Right now, though, that’s still its latest comment, so the fix isn’t yet ready to go. Honestly, this is far from the biggest problem in the world — the Doorbells still otherwise seem to operate just fine — but considering just how odd it must be to hear flawless French in a bog-standard American accent, we’ll still be very pleased to see that fix arrive, all the same.
We’ll keep an eye out for any further progress regarding this issue, and update you with word of Google’s ultimate fix once that’s finally ready for deployment.
