The jig is up: Samsung will terminate Bixby rewards points system
- Samsung will terminate the My Bixby Level service on August 10, 2018.
- My Bixby Level is a service which gives users points for using the Bixby virtual assistant. The points can be redeemed for contests and discounts.
- The termination of My Bixby Level could mean that Bixby is doing well enough on its own now.
Samsung sent out a notice today – via The Verge – that it will terminate its My Bixby Level service come this August. Is this a bad thing or a good thing?
My Bixby Level is/was a points-earning service that rewarded users for using the Bixby virtual assistant. By issuing commands, tweaking settings, and generally just toying around with Bixby, you earn points that can be redeemed towards various things, most notably Samsung Pay points which could be put towards discounts and contest entries.
With Samsung announcing the end of the service on August 10, 2018, it begs the question: does this mean that Bixby is doing well enough now that Samsung doesn’t need to bribe people to use it, or does this mean that the company is turning the service off because the only people using it are those who are gaming the system?
A quick Google search of My Bixby Level nets many results of people sharing tips and tricks on how to gain points quickly and easily. Since points have a cursory cash value – they can be turned in towards discounts on things like gift cards – a dedicated Bixby user could earn quite a return. Maybe this is a situation where a minority of users ruined it for the rest of us.
Regardless, Samsung’s Bixby still faces an uphill battle competing with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. We’ll have to wait to see whether the elimination of My Bixby Level hurts or helps Samsung’s user numbers in the long run.
