You told us: Most of you wouldn't buy early in-display selfie camera phones

In-display selfie cameras have been on the horizon for a long time now, enabling manufacturers to make smartphones without display cutouts, notches, pop-up selfie cameras, or major bezels.

2020 saw the first major phone with an in-display selfie camera launch in the ZTE Axon 20 5G, packing a 32MP camera under the screen. We haven’t put this phone to the test just yet, but we’re definitely expecting room for improvement with first-generation technology like this.

So that got us wondering whether Android Authority readers would be willing to buy phones with early generation in-display selfie technology. Here’s how you voted.

Results

We posted this poll on October 25 2020, and 3,721 votes were cast. The majority of respondents (58%) said they would rather wait until the technology has been developed more. Meanwhile, 42% of voters said they’d buy a phone with an in-display selfie camera even if the quality wasn’t great.

We’re not surprised that most of you would prefer to wait for the technology to improve, as picture quality is expected to be inferior to normal selfie cameras right now. Additionally, the display area above the camera is also expected to be hazy compared to the rest of the screen (at least on early phones).

Nevertheless, it’s clear that many of you are willing to overlook any picture/screen quality issues for bragging rights or the convenience of a proper full screen experience. And with the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, and Samsung all working on the technology, we might be spoiled for choice in 2021.

This also feels like a similar situation to the one we faced in early 2018, when in-display fingerprint sensors were still extremely cutting edge and rare. Back then, in-display scanners were very slow and could take several tries to successfully authenticate, while traditional scanners were undoubtedly faster and more accurate.

In saying so, we’ve seen the technology improve in a big way since then. Some phones are still a little finicky and slow today, but many devices can deliver quick, accurate biometric authentication. Hopefully in-display selfie cameras progress at a similar if not faster rate.
