TL;DR
  • The HUAWEI P50 series is officially launching on July 29.
  • Consumer chief Richard Yu confirmed that it would have “new mobile imaging technology.”

Huawei’s smartphone business has been under plenty of pressure owing to the US trade ban, but the company gave us a sneak peek at the upcoming P50 series earlier this year. It’s taken a while, but we finally have a launch date for the new flagship family.

HUAWEI announced a July 29 flagship product conference on Weibo today, with consumer group CEO Richard Yu confirming that the event would see the debut of the P50 series. Check out the rough, machine-translated post below.

Yu also hints at a “new mobile imaging technology” for the phones, so we do wonder what HUAWEI has in store for the P50 series. The firm has pioneered and/or popularized a few camera technologies in the mobile space over the years, such as RYYB camera sensors, the modern night mode, and periscope cameras.

The P50 teaser image (seen at the top of the page) also suggests we could be looking at a huge camera sensor. Previous rumors hinted at the one-inch IMX800 sensor landing inside the new flagships. HUAWEI wouldn’t be the first with a one-inch sensor though, as the Sharp Aquos R6 launched in Japan earlier this year packing a 20MP one-inch camera.

The only real certainty at this point is that the new phones will lack Google integration, owing to US sanctions. So we’ll likely need to wait until next week to get all the details.
