TL;DR
  • Leaked HUAWEI Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro slides have clued us in to a few more aspects of the upcoming handsets.
  • The slides touch on the phone’s battery, camera, storage, and other features.
  • The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are expected to cost around $833 and $1,111 respectively.

Fresh HUAWEI Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro details have emerged in some seemingly official slides. The images arrive courtesy of Hebrew language website Girafa yesterday, giving us a look at some device aspects that haven’t featured so prominently in the news.

First up, the phones’ rumored triple-camera setup will reportedly forego a telephoto lens found on the previous HUAWEI P20 Pro‘s triple camera, and instead use an ultra wide-angle lens (the P20 Pro’s triple camera setup houses an 8MP telephoto lens, 40MP RGB lens, and a 20MP monochrome lens). This could potentially result in a less impressive zoom in favor of fitting more of whatever you’re snapping into the frame. Which approach is best usually comes down to personal preference.

According to one of the slides, the camera system will also include “AI smart zoom” with moving object detection, and HUAWEI’s HiVision AI component that’s shaping up to be similar to Google Lens. It’s not the first time we’ve heard about AI-enabled zoom on the Mate 20, as an earlier report shed light on the feature last week.

As for the cameras on the front, there’s said to be a 24MP main sensor on both Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. However, the Pro variant will benefit from 3D facial recognition (said to work in half a second) which is lacking on the standard model. The slides also reaffirmed that the Pro model would be the only to support an in-display fingerprint sensor.

HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro leaked slide showing its battery life.

We’d previously heard the Mate 20 would support fast wired charging, but the device’s supposed 4,200mAh battery will purportedly charge as much as 70 percent in a 30-minute cycle with SuperCharge 2.0. The battery life itself apparently represents a more than a 20 percent improvement on last year’s Mate 10. Additionally, you’ll see 15W wireless charging on both Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro.

Meanwhile, HUAWEI is said to be shrinking its expandable storage format from microSD to a so-called nanoSD format. It’s not clear what exactly the plan for this is yet, but if it relies on dedicated HUAWEI nano cards it sounds like it’s just going to be an inconvenience.

Other tidbits include IP67 certification for dust and water resistance on the Mate 20 Pro, while an IP53 rating is rumored for the standard version. Both handsets are set to feature stereo speakers, “bone voice ID” that will work in crowded areas, and Android Pie.

Finally, the Mate 20 Pro price in Israel will apparently be around NIS 4,000, which works out at ~$1,111, while the Mate 20 price would be in the region of NIS 3,000, or ~$833.
