You told us: Most of you think the HUAWEI ban should be dropped altogether

It’s been over two years since the US instituted a trade ban against HUAWEI, citing security concerns to sanction the Chinese manufacturer’s networking and consumer divisions. This has resulted in the brand losing access to key suppliers (including chipmaking partner TSMC) as well as Google support.

The US just implemented another law targeting HUAWEI (and others) last week, but we wondered what Android Authority readers thought of the ongoing situation. We subsequently conducted a poll, and here’s how you voted.

Should the HUAWEI ban be tightened or loosened?

Results

Our poll garnered just over 1,200 votes as of writing, and ~57% of respondents say the HUAWEI ban should be dropped altogether. This is understandable for HUAWEI fans in particular, as we’ve seen some fantastic hardware like the Mate X2, Mate 40 Pro, and P50 series. So dropping the US ban would open the door for more chipset supplies and all-important Google integration.

Meanwhile, ~25% of polled readers were in favor of the ban actually being tightened. Finally, ~17% of respondents said the ban should be loosened rather than tightened or dropped altogether.

When you look at it another way, roughly 74% of polled readers are in favor of the HUAWEI ban being dropped or loosened. It all suggests that the current sanctions are mostly unpopular among Android Authority‘s readers.

• Drone9: So many years of politicking and still no official reports, evidences or documented findings were ever presented. What a joke.
• Avieshek: It should be tightened : For the network equipment as that’s your focus article. As for consumer electronics, why not start with a new branding like PUBG did with India Ban – the money is all yours, they’re not freezing your accounts? It’s quicker than bleeding more money.
• Albin: Here in Canada the federal gov has been “ragging the puck” on the decision whether HUAWEI can contract for the 5G network build-out (it’s already big in existing 4G infrastructure) – resolution of the Meng (CFO) detention, Biden administration’s continuation of Trump’s ban, and “Five Eyes” (including Aussie and UK) security sharing concerns have put push to shove, and will be negative for HUAWEI. The consequence is likely years of delay and extra cost to Canadian consumers for the build out, relying on the European competitors with much more limited capacity and more expensive technology. Not in my competency to decide if the legitimate security concerns about China could be rationally addressed if there was less ideology and trade gaming in play.
