TL;DR
  • Google AI Studio makes it easy to get started with app development, but actually running your code has been a little awkward.
  • Google’s now looking to add a little polish to that process by letting you access these vibe-coded apps through the Play Store.
  • This is getting started for personal apps, but the plan is to soon expand it to allow for limited group sharing.

App creation is being democratized. While there are plenty of reasons to be a little wary of the rise of AI-powered software development tools, it’s also impossible to deny that they’re making it practical for a whole lot more people to try their hand at building an app. Maybe you’ve used tools like Google’s AI Studio to build a custom app that solves a problem in your life that nobody else’s software was addressing. Today we’ve got some good news for fans of vibe coding for Android, as Google announces new Play support for these custom apps.

Starting today, you’ll be able to launch your AI Studio creations right from Google Play, just like any publicly available Android app. The idea here is to help streamline the process of loading these custom programs onto your devices, rather than requiring a lot of awkward sideloading.

Access is getting underway in select markets for users 18 and older, and for the moment you’ll just be able to install and run your own apps this way. But coming soon, Google plans to expand the reach of these kind of apps to your personal circle, as well, letting you share them among a limited group.

If that experience ends up tickling your fancy and getting you thinking about the possibility of maybe one day even releasing your app to the public at large — well, Google has thought about that, too! While the features the company is announcing today are designed for private access to vibe-coded apps, Google’s also building tools to help interested users transition to full-blown developer accounts. That’s still happening further down the line, though, and there’s no pressure if you just want to keep distribution super-limited.

Google notes that both AI Studio and the Play Store have security policies in place to keep users and their data safe even when running vibe-coded apps from their friends. If you’ve got an idea for a useful new app that you’ve been kicking around in the back of your head, this might finally be the excuse to try making it a reality.
