After months of rumors and leaks, Google finally announced the Pixel 3a and 3a XL. Even though it’s easy to assume the two Pixel 3a phones are firmly in the mid-range, there’s more going on than meets the eye. Let’s take a look at the full list of Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL specs.

If you needed any evidence that the Pixel 3a phones are mid-range smartphones, look no further than their displays. Instead of using some version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass for the display, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL feature Dragontrail. The shift to Dragontrail was likely a cost-saving decision on Google’s part.

That said, Dragontrail is more prone to breaking relative to Gorilla Glass. Also, the latest iteration of Dragontrail — Dragontrail Pro — was released in 2016. That doesn’t compare well to Corning, which released Gorilla Glass 6 in 2018. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on the Pixel 3a and 3a XL’s displays in our testing.

Also note the lack of a second front camera for wider-angle selfies. That’s something we can live with, since the rear camera hardware seems to be the exact same hardware found in the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. We’ll wait and see how the image quality stacks up to the Pixel 3 phones and other mid-range smartphones.

On the flip side, welcome back headphone jack!
