Google is testing a dark mode for the Google One app

We don't know when Google plans to implement a dark mode for Google One.

With many of Google’s apps getting the dark mode treatment, app developer Jane Manchun Wong said today on Twitter the Google One app could be next in line to get a darker coat of paint.

Based on Wong’s screenshots, Google One’s dark mode is more of a dark grey mode than a “true black” dark mode. That’s not necessarily a bad thing — the contrast between gray and white isn’t as stark as the contrast between black and white. That means your eyes will adjust better to a gray background.

There’s also a benefit with readability. Text-scrolling and quick movements almost “smear” when there’s a true black background. Meanwhile, the jitter doesn’t show up nearly as much on a dark gray background.

It’s not surprising to see a dark grey theme, since other Google apps feature a similar grey for their dark modes. However, some will be disappointed by the lack of a true black for the background.

We don’t know when Google plans to roll out dark mode to the Google One app. However, it’s nice to see Google continually work on the app. Last week, the company announced automatic phone backups through Google One for subscribers.
