Smart lights not changing colors? Blame Google Home
Oct 6, 2026 — 11:39 AM ET

- Google Home is failing to adjust the color of connected smart lights.
- The problem affects multiple smart light brands.
- It doesn’t seem like Google has acknowledged the issue yet.
Google Home is having a weird, specific issue today. As pointed out on Reddit, Home is having trouble controlling the color of connected smart lights. The issue is affecting lights from multiple manufacturers.
According a post on the Google Home subeddit by user baddebate, Google Home is unable to change the colors of their smart lights. This is true when trying to control the lights directly using the Google Home app, or by voice through a Nest Hub smart display. Google Home routines that change light colors are also apparently affected.
A dozen or so other users commented on baddebate’s post to echo their sentiment — this seems to be a widespread issue. I tried changing the color of some of my Philips Hue lights this morning using Google Home, and sure enough, it’s not working for me either. Neither the Google Home app nor any of my various Google Home-connected speakers are able to adjust the color of my smart lights.
Turning lights on and off works fine, and brightness can still be adjusted through Google Home; it’s only color control that’s affected. Of course, this being an issue on Google Home’s end, you’re still able to adjust light color using manufacturer apps.
Are your Google Home-connected smart lights acting right today? Have you somehow solved this issue on your own? Let us know in the comments.
