You can now use your voice to set location-based reminders on Google Home

If you tell Google Home to remind you to pick up milk at Walmart, you will most likely get that reminder at any Walmart location.

Google Home
TL;DR
  • You can now set location-based reminders on Google Home.
  • Your phone will then remind you when you arrive at the location, assuming location services are turned on.
  • Those reminders can be pushed out to your Android and iOS devices.

Even though you can set location-based reminders on your phone, you could previously not do so on your Google Home device. That changed today, when Google announced you can use your voice to set location-based reminders on Google Home.

With the feature, you can say things like, “Hey Google, set a reminder to pick up more coffee at the grocery store.” Assuming your phone has location services turned on, Google Assistant will send you a reminder once you arrive at the location.

Yup, we’ve all been there. Try saying, “Hey Google, set a reminder to pick up more coffee at the grocery store” and your Google Assistant will remind you on your phone. pic.twitter.com/IkLjV4I2zd

You can be more specific with the kind of store for the reminder, such as a Walmart or Starbucks. Assistant will still remind you what to get, regardless of which Walmart of Starbucks location you visit.

This compares favorably to Siri, which asks you to specify which location you want to be reminded at. Speaking of which, location-based reminders work with Android and iOS devices.

Unfortunately, the feature seems to be U.S. only for the time being. Also, it is not yet available for non-English speakers. Finally, you still have to choose your wording carefully. As SlashGear noted, not only can you not define a specific store, but Assistant might not be able to recognize the difference between a general reminder and a location-based one.

Even with the limitations, Home and Assistant have only gotten smarter over time. Home was recently updated to support hands-free calling in the UK and show the weather on your Chromecast. Meanwhile, third-parties can customize Assistant voice commands and perform multiple Assistant actions at once, with the latter featuring many limitations.
